  • Punching through grommets in the firewall

Hey folks curious to know how you all go about punching through the wiring grommets?

The way ive done it in the past is just use a sharp point to pierce through the grommet then feed wiring through but these have only been for amps for sedans etc (never to go off road).

Can I do this as usual but add a hint of silicone around the wiring to keep it hopefully waterproof for when I start doing some water crossings. Wanting to add driving light switch wiring and eventually compressor and locker switches plus what ever else i think of.

    Thanks all!!

Be really careful punching holes through any grommets that already have wires going through them , we have done 3 major wiring repairs to harnesses and replaced burnt out ECM's just this month
If there are no wires and it is just a grommet i use a test light to poke a small hole through then feed the wiring through with pointy nose pliers

when I had to run the cable thru for thu for the uhf antennae I found the grommet had a raise nipple so I cut the end off with side cutters.
Followed advise from the arb dealer pushed a nylon tube thru the grommet then pushed the cable inside the tube.
Pulled the tube out from inside the car,
pulled the cable so I had enough to make the connection.
Put sikaflex all the way around the cable then pulled it into the grommet.
looks like a good seal and the finish looks neat.
word of warning, there are a lot of small wires used for ecu etc..

If you think you will need extra wires in the future use some multi core trailer cable so you have spare wires for future addition.
Learnt that here on another thread.

      they can be damaged easily.
pushing something sharp thru the grommet could damage the fine wires so be carful

When I get closer to doing the driving lights I'll explore around a bit to check my options. Hate to be paying for wiring/ ecu repairs/ replacement.

Or might bite the bullet n get a workshop to do for me so if they stuff it, they pay for it.

Dont get me wrong, im good on the spannets and wiring jobs but always hesitate when piercing through grommets and when there are wires nearby

Not sure on the 150's but the 120's have a grommet to the right of the main wiring harness. There is no way on gods earth I would be trying to put wires through the main loom on the left of picture. Accident waiting to happen in my opinion..... [IMG][/IMG]

I think the thread I read was where an auto leckie tried to go through the grommet on a 120 as in your pic and damaged the wiring it was a member on here a few months back.

With the 150 passengers side cut the nipple of the grommet and you clear of the wires.
this is where I went through

Had a close look today and its where the uhf aerial cable went through so if push comes to shove I'll open up the hole a bit more, feed another few wires in and stick sickaflex around it all to seal it up

In that picture of the main 120 wiring grommet.
You can drill a hole through that little black square on the panel side
Yes it was scary as hell and i have yet to seal it properly on the engine side.(sealed on the inside)
Thats where i run my cable for the dual battery.

Maybe our local ARB dealer needs your tip Fred63 2 of the cars we had to repair came from them!
