  • Get behind dash for USB socket install

I'm wanting to install a Narva twin USB socket in the dash for running the iPad with Hema as the supplied USB doesn't charge while the iPad is running. Please see the attached picture of where I want to put it. Question is how do I get behind there? What comes off and how. Click image for larger version

Not answering your question but giving you another 😃
iPad needs more amps than a normal usb can provide. Most usb in car chargers for iPad are at least 2.1amps. Is the Narva one gonna be enough?

There are now some usb outlets which supply 2.1 amp, but you might need to only power the ipad, and run the gps off a different outlet.
Some also have a 1.0 and a 2.1 amp on the same socket.

as for getting in there, pull out the control panel for the aircon (just grab top and bottom at each end and yank) then pry out the radio fascia.

The Narva twin USB charger will do an Ipad just fine, in fact you can do 2 on the same Socket.

I haven't pulled a 150 dash apart so cant help on that count.

My understanding is that they are 2.5A so should charge one iPad if nothing is connected to the other socket.

The GPS is the iPad so one socket required.

You might find that the Narva dual USB sockets won't fit there because of the air vents. You need about 50mm clearance at the back for those sockets to fit. Your best bet would probably be on the blanks near the H4/L4 selector dial or finding a different style of USB socket to mount.

You're right that the Narva ones do supply up to 2.5A.

I just use something like this.

Stupid question perhaps but how many amps does the 12v ciggy socket actually supply? I've never thought to measure it but use one of these dual socket USB adapters in mine.

                    http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page233.html

1 port supplies 2.1 amps, the other 1 amp.

Hi thanks for tips so far.
I am aware of the USB adapters for the 12v socket (and use one in the rear for charging the kids stuff) but on a longtime trip it's annoying having the cable go from down on the centre consol to up on the dash where the ipad is mounted. I also have a Bad Elf GPS plugged into the iPad which the cable then plugs into, Twice on the last trip the passenger nearly ripped the Bad Elf out of the socket which I am sure could break the connector. I am goingaway for a three week trip at Christmas and don't want the annoying cable hanging down the whole time with the potential problem of breaking the connector.

It might be that I will put the USB on top of the dash it just all depends what room is behind there

I pulled my glove box out (120) and installed the Narva Twin socket (1 cig + 2 usb) in the top compartment of the glove box. Works perfect and got the idea from PP. The only issue with the Narva Twin is that the USB has a constant blue light, cover on or off it does not turn off, not sure how much it draws but cannot be much i guess.

                          Cheers,

                              Hi Karl,

I agree with AK7 - probably not enough space there to install the USB. Having the same hate for cables running across the centre console, I installed a new 12V socket at the bottom of the dash near the H4/L4 switch - see 2nd photo in my post here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post486645

I was contemplating installing a USB charging socket, but went 12V Cigarette instead, with a plug-in USB charger that sits almost flush in the socket - you can get them with dual 2.1A USB ports. I felt this gave me the best of both worlds (12V or USB).

Further up in the post (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post485805) I have some information on adding 12V sockets and there's also a link in the post to information on how to remove the Glovebox if you want to run cables to the engine bay.

Ironman has an excellent post showing how to get access to this part of the dash: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...t=camera+power, which helped me massively when I did my wiring! As Isiman said above, you literally just grab and pull out the Aircon panel.

The standard 12V sockets are rated at 10A (120W). I ran a totally new circuit from the battery, switched via a relay. I trigger the relay from the 12V socket on the back of the centre console (2nd row seat area), because this was much easier to access than the one in the centre console.

                              Cheers,
                              Adam
