  • Upgrade Headlights on 150 GXL to VX/Kakadu

    Hi all

I quite like the headlights (specifically the DRL) on the 150 VX & Kakadu models but couldnt justify the extra.

Wondering if any has done the swap to these headlights (Genuine Toyota only) on the 150 GXL?

Would it be a straight swap or would there be some wiring involved? Given GXL has DRL feature already.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

Can you please tell me how your GXL halogen lights are, presuming you have a 2014 facelift Prado?
Reason I ask is I will be upgrading my 2012 GXL in September 2015 and would like to know how the standard GXL lights are, this may tip me towards VX if they aren't up to scratch. I put a HID kit in my GXL to fix my lighting issues on dark country roads

On the LED/DRL headlight upgrade - Ring Toyota and ask them for parts only price, this will probably scare you off

I don't think there is any "Toyota Only" option available out there yet. I got my 2014 Prado Altitude just last September and exerted my best effort but without much luck. Dealers simply got no way out. Besides it won't simply be a headlight upgrade if ever but you will need to get a self levelling system installed too because of the HID's glare. BTW, I will never trade my Altitude for VX just to get me HIDs? No sir. Thank you.

When you get the bullbar fitted, they come with LED DRLs too.

If you're wanting to change the low beam as well as the DRL there could be an issue. I believe that the upper spec models have the "whiter" HID lights that include a wash function and I seem to recall this is necessary for these.

                Australian standards (WRT HID Lights)
                • Due to their higher light output, HID lamps must comply with a specific set of Australian Design Rules.
                • These include specifics around light colour, proportions of specified light wavelengths (including blue wavelengths) and ultra violet (UV) emissions.
                • Self-levelling systems and headlight washers are required to off-set the increased risk of dazzling other drivers.

After some time away being (been busy moving house), asked Toyota on this and said i would need to change the headlights, front bumper (for the washers). This would be over the $1000 mark. No mention on the leveling mechanism though. Will give this a miss now with only option being the Phillips bulbs or copies (probably wont bother with this option).

ROOF - I actually don't mind Halogens but my pet hate is how from a distance the right side (the left may do it as well but haven't noticed) keep bouncing around and the lights are "flashy". At first i thought it was my Prado only but have noticed it on others as well.

For the above comment my leveling is set to 0. Can anyone else provide any feedback?

                  Thanks

The lights appear flashy on some of the newer vehicles, due to our roads not being perfectly flat. It only takes a small dip to bounce the lights just a little bit. I think this is due to the newer lights producing a more direct beam of light, which projects further from the vehicle in a narrower beam, rather than the older vehicles which have a rounder beam of light that does not project so far.

I run my light leveller on '1'.

The off side, or driver's side, headlight sits lower than the nearside light. Factory set to reduce glare into the eyes of the oncoming driver, however, with cabin adjustment being made available on some vehicles, some driver's set their lights too high on some vehicles.

My Prado is a 2010 model GXL with standard lights. I changed the low beam globes to Philips H11, which gave me extra light output, however, when I travelled to south west W.A. earlier this year and bounced around on the dirt roads, both globes failed within 2 weeks of each other. I replaced both globes with Repco brand H11, as that was all I could find over there at the time, and they are still going well. The Philips globes were stamped 'Made in Germany,' thought they would have lasted longer.

I ran the Phillips globes in my previous 120 GXL, absolutely crap life wize - would only last 6 months before blowing out, I went through about 4 or 5 sets. (I did not run the headlights during the day) Phillips to their credit did replace them at no cost and had the seller check my voltage but could not find a problem.

Don't look at me, I'm Gen X, we are stuck in the middle of all this....

The Philips lasted for 4 years, I run them daytime when it is raining, or driving on country roads. Dirt roads here and other states did not affect the globes, but not long after hitting W.A., both globes died within 2 weeks of each other.

Hi guys from Italy, just some questions about how to upgrade the LC150 previous front into the new facelift.
From what I read up, to change the headlight it is necessary to change:
                          - headlamps: YES
                          - bumper: YES
                          - front grid: ?
                          - camera: ?

What else, do you think is it possible?
I just destroyed the front bumper...so I would try to give a new plastic surgery to the LC150.

                          Thnks for helping.

Yowie, it must be WA. I just had 2 globes go within 2 weeks of one another while over there in May....... or the fact that they were on from when I left Sydney.
