  • Rear Lights for Camping / Reversing

    Hello All,

What's peoples thoughts on rear lights for camping, etc. I'm thinking either:
    1. Small LED bar mounted beneath the roof rack (something like the Narva 72730 http://www.narva.com.au/products/bro...red-light-bars)
    2. One or two LED work lights (Something similar to http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/compact-led-2) on brackets mounted to my Pioneer roof rack
    3. Rear tyre mounted LED lights, similar to the Kaymar or AMTS setup

    Pro's and Con's I see for each:
    1. Pro's: neat and tidy, discreet and out of the way. Con's: can't adjust light direction.
    2. Pro's: mostly neat and tidy and out of the way, light direction is adjustable. Con's minor wind drag (debatable) and a little bit in the way (on a Pioneer rack)
    3. Pro's: height adjustable, can be turned left and right. Con's, potentially more prone to damage or theft, need to purchase additional brackets which starts to get expensive

    Cheers,

    Adrian

All doable. Be careful you don't go too powerful, not for the current draw but the actual intensity of the light. I have bought a heap of LED bars from an ebay trader sunyee to fit reversing lights to utes and trailers, front led bars etc. A very economical alternative to the brand names and so far (a few years of use) no issues.

Pair of six inch single row LEDs will do just fine.

        Hi Adrian,
I have these on my Prado:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BEAMAX-7I...item5b0195742c
I have them mounted between the rails on my roof rack, they are excellent for camping and very low power draw.
I use these switches too http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Push-swit...item19f3bf0c1d
The light is more than ample for camping and the spread is excellent. Ive used them for 6 months (maybe 100 hrs total so far) and they have not missed a beat.

One of the reasons for going with the telescopic light is so that I can raise it above the roof rack and point it forwards to light up the roof rack area during packing/unpacking at night.

Are they wired as work lights or reversing lights?

Mr Plod in Vic takes a very dim view to really bright reversing lights coming on when you park in suburbia.

I went portable following Bushbashers idea sometime back. The beauty of this is I can place it anywhere around the Prado as required and it's out of light fingers reached when not in use...

                  Nice strong magnet

I can now take it out when needed and mount virtually anywhere within reach of a power outlet

Jimmy, thanks, I was eyeing off these switches already for a few items. The light bars look alright too for the price.

AMTS, this is a good point too, thanks.

VeeZeeSS, this is pretty much what I was initially thinking, as I have the same rack on order. It's a very clean look!

Craig, this with 5m of cable is probably the most economical and flexible of all!

                      Thanks again!

I have the same set up as VeeZee, ( pinched his idea!) they are good for distance, but no good for immediate area behind the Prado if the door is closed, the rear spoiler gets in the way... Still love them but!

Why couldn't a small, low profile LED reverse/rear work light be mounted to the rear spoiler (under side)?
