  • GXL middle seat cig socket USB swap

Hello... Just wondering if anybody has replaced the cig socket that is provided for the middle seats underneath the air con controls?

Looking to replace with a single or double USB outlet.

    Thanks,

    Peter Lee

Hi, Never thought of doing that, always figured the cig outlet was useful. I keep multiple cig-usb adaptors in the car anyway. I am replacing one of the blank switch panels in the centre console with one of these though: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Power-Out...item19ff97e7c7

I installed two seperate USB charger points into that trim down low. Haven't got a photo of it, but looks like they should be there. Leave the socket where it is and put in extras, wired up to aux battery and all is good.

Yep have adaptors... but the stick out and kids kick both them and the little flap that goes over the cig socket.

I don't have aux battery... most of my power stuff is in the camper but charging while on the go is really handy with all the devices we know and love! So my idea is to use the existing wiring going into there, as that cig point is rated 12v 120W - 10amps - although wiring thin?

If I left the cig socket as well then to ensure other people don't overdo it by accident I'd probably need some some sort of toggle switch between 'cig / usb'.

I was initially just worried that something 'strange' might happen if the car systems detect something different here... but I'm not really sure how that could be the case as a cig usb adaptor in there doesnt' seem to cause any problems.

In your shoes then I would probably run a new wire from the battery with a fuse through to the centre console. Use a micro relay under the console switched by the factory cig socket wiring to turn on & off power supply wired to the new socket and the factory socket. Hopefully you can follow what I'm saying, if done this way no need to toggle between the two, no need to remember to only have one plugged in at a time and best of all the factory socket can now truly handle a decent load.
