  • Driving lights on facelift 150 without a bullbar?

    Hi

We don't have a bullbar but I'd like to put some driving lights on the front of our 2014 GXL. One thing I've noticed is that with each model the "depth" of the bumper gets smaller and smaller until, like the 150, there is nothing much left. I know they're doing it to make it safer for pedestrians but it does mean there is nothing left to put lights on!

Has anyone else mounted lights to their bumper? What were they secured to? On our Subaru Outback I used a small bar that sat behind the numerplate and screwed into the bumper but found the lights wobbled a lot (even though they were 150mm Narva's - not huge).

Would I be better off with a light bar or LED lights because they weigh less?

You could take inspiration from this -

Thanks... I saw that. I was hoping to mount it a little lower!

Is there any way you could utilise the front end of the chassis (through the opening below the number plate position) and mount a small bar to it, and then fix the lights to that bar?

isn't there an ADR regarding things such as lights etc. not being mounted forward of the bumper / bullbar.

i though i read it on here somewhere

Probably best to get a nudgebar to remain legal.

Hi peter-mcc, I have just fitted a Lightforce LED lightbar to my 2012 Altitude on the OEM nudge bar. Few local Prados with the nudge bar have standard round spotties but I didn't like the appearance. Plus they have had to get brackets welded to the nudge bar to fit the spotties due to their weight (3kg each compared to 1.2kg for the Lightforce light bar).

Lightforce also have a light switch specifically designed for the 150 Prado blanks (sorry Amts, didn't know this when I contacted you but will be in touch for other stuff).

I preferred look of Oem bar as it is 75mm whereas most after market nudge bars are only 50mm. Haven't seen anybody with lightbar on Oem nudge bar before, but I am very happy with mine.

BTW, the Lightforce 20 inch combo light bar is brilliant, literally. I know you can get Chinese made light bars pretty cheap but being a parochial South Aussie, I wanted to buy off the local Lightforce guys.

Thanks guys. I didn't really want to get a nudge bar - might as well go the whole hog and get a bullbar if I'm heading that way.

In the end I've decided to get a bull bar so won't end up trying this.

But as I looked into it I think it could be done. There seems to be a metal frame that runs under the bottom edge of the grill. I'm fairly sure that if I mounted the light bar to the top edge of the bumper near the grill that it would be pretty close to the metal frame. Hopefully that would give it enough strength so it didn't wobble too much.

I'm getting an AFN bull bar which replaced the whole bumper so I don't want to drill any holes into it... sorry! Thanks for the advice.

Good choice, you can then sell of the bumper. Not hard to install yourself.

LOL $3000 bulbar just hold $250 worth of lights. $500 75mm steel nudge bar mounted to the same chassis points would have made more sense.

Are you upgrading the front suspension to take the 50kg of bar and lights forward of the front roll centre too? Would make sense too now I guess.

The bar was $2135 delivered... but the lights were only $110 so the ratio is about right. I'm getting the bar for other reasons - putting the lights on it is just a bonus

Will do - hoping it arrives so I can get it fitted before we go down to the snow in a few weeks.
