  • LED Driving Lights - Quick straw poll ?

I am looking at getting an ARB bar for the new GXL, plus some lights. Not sure yet whether to go Lightbar, or Spotties. I do though like the look and performance of the ARB Intensity (would probably only go the 21 anyway), but the Lightforce 180's look a really good performer as well, based on web video reviews.

Either of these options are well over $1k plus fitting, whereas a light bar with similar (?) output will be a lot less. Looking for a spot and spread combo. Don't mind paying the money, it's more a question of what's the best value for the occasional night on and off road trip.

So the first question is - does anyone have any particular view on the two lights specifically mentioned ?
Secondly, any general thoughts on spot ties versus light bar ?

    Thanks

    JC

If you want a light bar that it going to be close in the output of ARB intensity or the light force, you'll be spending the same kind of money on a Wurton or Rigid Industries. Sure all those cheap LED lightbars on ebay claim to have a huge light output but they don't actually go that far down the road. Unlike the ARB or Lightforce.
Just to put another consideration in there, have you looked at the new IPF LED spot lights?

Or Britax. Disagree about the lightbar comment though. Side by side #1's Rigid is no better than #2's Sunyee. And four times the cost.

I have the sunyee copy of the arb intensity and find them good at a fraction of the price. They are power hungry though at 185w each

I have a Sunyee 22" light bar, and while it is really good for flooding the road with light, it doesnt have the distance ability of a traditional spot light. (hence why i still have my lightforce halogen spots on the bull bar)

I've heard mixed reviews on the Intensity's. Some people have said they are amazing, while others have told me that they were only good for flooding the road, and they wish they'd gone with HID lights instead...

thanks for the replies. Haven't looked at the IPF but will do.

Found this excellent on line review of a bunch of spotties and light bars. Well worth a look. http://www.outbacktravelaustralia.co...lights-on-test

Even though the quality of the video is not full HD, you can tell the difference in output/penetration quite easily. IMHO, i thought the ARB's were lacking compared to some of the Lightforce options......still a great light i'm sure and i had my mind set on it, but after looking at this, has made the choice harder ....

My advice is don't waste your money buying lights at $900 each. I have the older HID Britax lights and they are good but so are the cheaper specials. Spottiies aren't like true love!

I've got two IPF's (Halogen) and been thinking about the most cost effective way to improve the current setup. I've been thinking of an LED lightbar to complement the two IPF spots, however, can't help but feel the real white LED light might overshadow the two halogen's and give them a dimmed/ineffective effect. Can anyone comment with experience about this combination?

Great price, I got quoted a whole lot more for them. Great units.

I've got lightforce genesis halogens and a 40 inch aurora bar hidden under the roof rack (separate switches). I tend to use the lightforce when there's a bit of traffic around as its not such a massive step down in light compared to dropping from the light bar to low beam. Light bar certainly turns things to daylight though and lights the edges of the road really well.

So is it fair to say that the lightbar drowns out the halogens? How do they fair when all on at the same time?

Yeah pretty much. I had the lightforce for about a year before I put the lightbar on and was a happy with them for spotting roos. I also find in heavy rain or lots of bugs more light is worse so halogens are good then ( or at least thats how I justify things to SWMBO haha)

I still find my Halogens are getting the light 900m up the road while the light bar seems to fall well short of that. I can definitely tell the difference between the bright white of the bar and the warm yellow/orange of the halogens when both are on.
