Hi, I decided today I would try to change the way my Prado always has the headlights on due to Toyota using the low beams for drl.
The issue I have with it is, that 70-80% of most peoples driving is done during the day time. In 6 months I had gone through a set of after market lamps. I do realise that visibility is a big safety factor and in saying that I have ordered a set of Narva 225 Ultima 50W HID lights which come with the drl LED's on the top of the light housing.
So this is what I did.
Firstly I realised the dash illumination lamps are only on when the headlight switch is in "Park" or "ON". So I picked up the dash illumination feed from under the dash on the right hand side behind the switch panel. This dash illumination feed would operate two SY4046 SPDT relays which I purchased from Jaycar. These relays have a normally open and a normally closed contact. The low beam wire at the back of the lights will be cut and the feed side connected to the common contact. The wire heading to the headlight connector is connected to the normally open contact. So when the dash lights are not on, the low beam power feed is interrupted but power is available at the normally closed contact which I will feed the LED drl on the new Narva's.
Connected a 2 core cable to the Green+ and White/Black- (the two centre wires on the plug) and run the cable through the firewall around to both low beam headlight connectors.
Relays inserted in existing wiring and coils connected to the Tail light feed.
The relays can then be taped to the wiring harness as they are very light and are encapsulated so no need to worry about water ingress.
