GXL Multi-Information Display Issues

I seem to be having a problem with my multi-information / multi-function display on my 2011 GXL. It seems like the backlight for the TFT panel is switching wildly between high and low. I don't know much about these displays but it goes flicks from bright to dark every couple of seconds randomly. It might stay on one setting for a couple of minutes then flick rapidly from light to dark. After a while and often when switching to reverse camera display, the screen goes black. I noticed the other day that when it goes black, you can still see the image, but it appears like there is no backlighting to make the image visible. Don't want to even think about replacing it!!! I would rather fit an aftermarket reverse camera for $100 or a decent 2DIN unit then entertain the thieving pr1cks at Toyota for a new one.

Hoping that someone else has experienced something similar of knows more about these screens than I do.

My guess would be the backlight is failing on the unit. Either the inverter or the small fluoro tube are failing.

Is it terminal Doug? Would love someone to tell me they're a generic TFT panel you can pick up on eBay but I'm guessing I'd be dreaming...

Not sure. If you pull it apart you might be bale to get part numbers. I would expect the components would cost maybe $30 at most. The fluoro tube is most likely generic but the inverter will be more specific. Try starting here http://www.ccflwarehouse.com/

Thanks Doug. You're a champion. The screen regularly cuts out and I'm worried SWMBO is going to reverse into something without it.
