  • OEX Alternator warranty experience

Those familiar with my thread would know I recently changed my alternator. I purchased an OEX one from repco due to it being Christmas eve and they were the only people in SA to have one. The new one I bought began to make noise after just 3000km. I took it back to Repco and put in a warranty claim and this is where my problems started.
To initiate a claim the faulty unit needs to be sent off to have the claim approved (fairly standard procedure) and this would take UP TO 2 weeks. The catch is that the store staff have no authority to issue a refund even if the fault is obvious. I was given 2 options: either "go without" an alternator for 2 weeks while I waited for the claim to be approved. Or. Purchase another alternator at my own cost and be refunded the $$$ for the first when the claim was approved.
Therein lied my dilemma. As shown by the video the alternator makes a squeaking noise when turned by hand and when in the car at idle it made a noise that is best described and a quiet wind-tunnel style noise.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49pHmfD2uvY

The charging rate was fine and the noise it made at idle wasn't what I'd call aggressive. This had me worried that if I purchased another alternator in the meantime and my claim got denied that I'd then be stuck with 2 alternators and $600 out of pocket.
Given I wasn't able to do without the car for 2 weeks I went with the option to purchase another alternator on the advice of the store staff that my warranty claim was 'more than likely' going to be approved.
Anyway it has now been 3 weeks and haven't heard anything at all from Repco about my alternator. I rang them and all they told me was 'it wasn't in yet' and I'd 'just have to wait'. I then rang OEX who told me off for ringing them directly and just told me to consult with my local store.
I don't know about the rest of the PP community but $600 is no small amount of $ and I'd certainly rather it in my account rather than Repco's.
Just a little warning to the rest of you.

How did you go with this, I would have been a pest to Repco and rang them every day until I got an Answer.

The day after I posted this I got a call saying the claim had been approved. 3 weeks on and the new, new alternator is making noise. Might be time to get the refund and go Denso!

I realise that this has been resolved but for future reference... Have the number for your state's consumer affairs in your phone. I would have expected, given the noise that it was making that it should have been replaced on the spot. It's amazing how calling consumer affairs from the shop can speed things up.

I did some research into my rights regarding it. Not too happy that I had to be out of pocket $600 for 3 weeks. This time I'm going to hound them for updates all the time. Don't plan on getting CA involved until completely necessary.

I have bought OEX starter motor last week from Repco, and after I have taken out my original and compared the two I decided against putting the OEX in, and after that I have came across your experience with OEX alternator, so I am happy I did not put it in. I have returned it to Repco, the sales person was not very happy saying that it was a special order. After I explained why I did not want it, he asked me how would I know that it would not work properly, as I did not give it a chance, not to mention that it has 1 year warranty. So I told him his 1 year warranty is not much good to me in the middle of Simpson desert, and that some customers had problems with other OEX products. He played it down, that I have no idea who is posting stuff on forums, that it could be some 12 year old kids. Ok, no worries, what ever, as long as he gave me back my money.

Sounds like some pretty clever 12 year olds sharing their opinions about inferior OEX products.

I read your post first before I read Borec's and i thought you were having a dig at me in it! Serves me right to read in the wrong order.
It's all the new rage these days, 12 year olds are no longer making 'your mum' jokes on Xbox, they've graduated to writing detailed forum posts...
If I had my time over I would have bought genuine to start with. One thing I have learned though. Several of the 120 series and hilux's have the exact same alternator as the 150. And they are considerably cheaper..

Would you know specifically which models and what are the part numbers?
However I am thinking about getting a second hand one and have it refurbished, and do the same with my current one, thsu have tow originals.

After bugging Repco some more I finally got a response that it had been approved. Finally free of the burden!

Repco warranty can be a time waster

Repco used to be good on warranty.
The last few years, it's a b.s process where contrary to trade practises act, you have to wait & hassle them.
I have had cases never answered, some claims re-entered to get half a result, some taken over 12 months.
It's quite ridiculous, you need to be very care full what products & brands you purchase.

They are breaking the law in many of these cases, they think they can make their own rules & procedure.
It's true, but not withstanding your statutory rights, so get the facts before you go in & use them.

Eg; If your purchase is within 14 days & you have a receipt, if the item is not working, they must issue a full refund.

I no longer use many now "Repco" branded products.

Generally if you stick with brand names:

                          Penrite for oils
                          Ryco for filters
TRW for steering & suspension & rotors
                          GMB for water pumps
                          Bendix for brake pads
                          Ngk plugs
                          Bosch starters & alternators etc

                          You "should" be ok.

Yeah I found the whole process annoying. Got told it would be a 2 week turnaround. $600 is a decent sum to be without for a month and I'd certainly rather it be in my account rather than theirs.
Who I believe to be the owner of this franchise was certainly better than the other staff members I dealt with. The first return he took a full summary of what the problem was, what affects it, etc. The second return was sent with the description 'broken' even though the problem was exactly the same.
I did consider taking it further but in a small town like Alice you have to be careful.
