  • Starter motor solenoid sealant

    G'day all.
Looking at pulling the starter off my TD150 to clean the solenoid contacts as I'm having issues and I feel they are the culprit.
When I put it back together I want to make sure the end cap has a good seal. Can anyone recommend a good sealant? I was thinking this:

Does anyone have any better ones? Tips on doing it would be appreciated too.

I compleated my apprenticeship 1992-1996 in a big Ford dealership, we always used loctite & permatex brands, ultra blue or blue Maxx. Awesome!

Specialising the toyota range I use grey Maxx. Grey is much nicer on the eye. Top tuff!

Excellent, thanks. Have you ever pulled the starter out? From what people say it's a DIY job

Yes, removed plenty on 1kz & a few 1kd, same principal.
        Disconnect batts.
        1 plug on starter.
        1 wire to remove.
The 1 bolt & 1 nut to remove from mounting.
For me, then they go to auto elec, let the expert get it right, although these usually need a clean.

Sounds good! I think I'm way overestimating the difficulty level of the removal/reinstallation. I'm thinking I have dirty/corroded contacts

            I photographed this 150 today.

See the black plug near the middle low edge of pic, unplug, the the grey cover, the nut is under that.
You can see the 2 mounting bolts, the top one is a stud in motor so you just remove the nut, where the wiring bracket is. The lower one should be nut & bolt. 17mm.

            Easy!

Pulled it apart today. Took about an hour to get the starter motor off due to extremely tight bolts. This is what I found inside the solenoid. Also found the rubber gasket to be cracked in one spot. Sandpaper and wire brush took care of most of it but I think some time in the future I will need to replace them. Forgot to take a photo when I had cleaned them. Ran some silicone sealant around the cap and re fitted. Easy as!
