  • Running cables to back of car from 2nd battery

About to do this on new 150GX. With thicker cables for anderson plug for trailer, is it easier to run the cable inside the chassis rail or through the interior? Link to photos /info anywhere? Also coming in through that grommet on the RHS will be wire for HR electric brakes, wiring for driving lights as well as wiring for fog lights in bull bar [already installed at bull bar fit] so to add the heavy cable to the rear will be a bit of a tight fit. Any tricks/ suggestions to getting them through? The UHF will go through the lhs grommet.

Generally if it terminates outside I'd run it outside. If inside then run it inside. All my lighting was internal. The EDB cabling was down the chassis rail.

I always run it inside if I can as it will be better protected. I ran twin 6B&S and twin 8B&S in the same grommet, with the 6B&S exiting the back to the anderson plug and the 8B&S going to a 6 way fuse block at the back. A bit of CRC spray will help slip it trough the grommet. Also if using twin cable cut about 5cm off one of them so that it is a staggered piece to push though in one go. Also a length of wire coat hanger is also useful for getting the wires through the grommet, and for the thicker wires a second set of hands can be useful to push while the other is pulling slowly.

Just finished doing dual battery, anderson plug and power sockets on my GXL 2.8L. I ran both twin cores (6B&S & 6mm) down right hand side under the trim. Started by poking them both through the grommet from inside to the engine bay. Put a nick in the grommet, taped the cables together and pushed them through. Did go a bit quick and pushed the grommet half out, but a bit of wiggling and slotted back in. Best to avoid that though and take it slowly, the CRC mentioned is a good idea. I'll do that when I run the driving light switch, thx 4 the tip Ran the cables under the airbox up to the 2nd battery.

There's a grommet down the back in the floor behind the rear side panel where you can run the 6B&S out to the anderson plug. I ran the 6mm across the back(I have a false floor for the drifta drawers, easy access) and have 2 power sockets in the LHS.

Cables under the trim are run next to the existing cabling and a little tight when replacing the trim, but fits back together ok. I do have some photos on the phone, I'll try to get some off to post, cheers.

Tourer777, when you got down to the back of the back door did you remove/loosen the rest of the trim to the back corner grommet or did you manage to get the wires under the carpet? if not how did you get the cables back the last metre or so?

I took the rear side panel completely off, ran up over the wheel arch and wiggled under the bits & pieces until I got back to the grommet:

It's the large size one from Supercheap:

Drilled a few holes and then attached with rivnuts/bolts. Is quite sturdy

Got all of the many cables in today , all through the rhs grommet using tips above ie tape various cables together, use a tiny bit of silicon spray, cut the grommet a little. Dual cable for anderson plug, electric brakes, driving lights, and another smaller dual cable to run odds and sods like UHF etc inside car. The trick was to do the biggest cable first and then tape the smaller ones to that one at a time. Some had to come from inside the car and some from under bonnet. Slide in or out as appropriate. Fiddly but doable. Next job is to connect them to the various things! By the way, I got the brake and anderson plug wiring to the back without removing that side panel as per photos above [but it is a GX]. I pulled the edge of the carpet out from under the side panel [ work from back corner] and you will find there is a pathway through under the carpet close to the edge and then down under seat into the wiring channel and through to the front kick panel

Is there a reason that yo need a battery tray, that flat piece that the tray bolts to has holes for battery bracket, I just put it straight on that with a 10mm thick piece of rubber under the battery and just brought the clamp, so anyone who has had that panel off in the back drivers side, is there enough room for a 12v soclet, usb charging outlets and a voltmeter. My anderson will be mounted on tow bar or somewhere back there ( when I get a tow bar). Tourer 77 do you have a pic with it off from further away so I can see if there is any cavities behind the cover.

Even better. I finally connected the 2nd battery up and everything to the 2nd battery and miracle of miracles, it all worked. I used a Hayman Reece loom for the HR compact IQ electric brakes and an ARB harness for the driving lights. The only real issue is that they are both way to long to allow connection to a battery on the LHS and I have gone to the 2nd battery on the RHS. Now I know it all works I will shorten them up to tidy things up in the engine bay. Next job is UHF cabling.
