Is there any way I can disconnect the headlghts from being constantly on during the day. The salesman said it is a safety issue common with many new vehicles. I would rather decide when I turn them on. Couldnt find answer in the manual. Cheers

Switching to side (parking) lights would do it (but then I think the central display dims down and your rear lights would be on)

What model and year is your vehicle. I'm guessing a very new 150?

DTRL has been a standard affair in North America since the early 90's.

Looks like Australia is finally making this standard.

The DTRL are on at the same time as the Head lights, its very annoying. burn through headlights much faster

Prado306 im guessing you have a GX or GXL. i was told they are like this because they are a mining spec vehicle.

I had the same gripe! Gahh! So I wrote to Toyota and I don't think they even understood because the reply talks only about running lights.... Anyway response pasted below.

                al.

Thank you for your recent email received by the Toyota Guest Experience Centre regarding the daytime running lights on your 2016 Prado GXL.#

As this is a safety feature implemented at the time of manufacture, the factory setting cannot be changed to turn them off.#

We have forwarded a copy of your feedback with your suggestions to our Product Planning Department. This department collates all such information for consideration with future product upgrades and/or changes.

                ##

We regret any disappointment this may cause and again thank you and appreciate your contact with TMCA and allowing us this opportunity to respond.

I still don't see what the big deal is. Makes me laugh every time I see one go past with the Parker's on (like that solves the issue lol) only to imagine all the dimmed dash lights being unreadable during the day.

                  Just plain weird behaviour.

My car has both the headlights and the "Front position" (Toyota name for parkers) lights turned on when the switch is in "Off" position and the engine is running. The car is a GX and only 3 days old.
The Toyota Manual (page 215) refers to the Off position of the switch pointing that only the headlights should be on.

My 2012 Prado had a proper "Off" position.

It is a common courtesy at the launching ramp to switch your headlights off in order to avoid blinding the others when backing down the ramp. I guess with the new car I shall switch the headlights to Parkers when launching the boat.

Sent an email to the salesperson, waiting for their response.

                    Cheers

They are called "daytime running lights" (DRL) - that's the official name for them.

Toyota's Manual refers to daytime running lights (DRL) fitted in vehicles with LED headlights (i.e. Prados above the GX and GXL models).

Prado GX and GXL are fitted with halogen not LED lights. My dealer advised me today after checking their other Prados on the lot both the "Front Position " and Headlights are operating (switched on) when the headlight switch is in "Off" position.

I could have understood if one of the two was "on" and the Manual suggest the same (see my previous post).

However I cannot see the reasonable explanation as to WHY two lights should be switched on at the same time when driving during the day.

The salesperson advised he'll contact Toyota direct and ask for clarification. Only Prados GX and GXLs are running both lights at the same time when in "Off" mode.

That is exactly the same answer I got back when I contacted Toyota for same reason in 2015.

P.S. this has been brought up several times before on the forum. My beef with this is the little green light that comes on to in the instrument panel indicating the headlights (or DRL as Toyota calls them) are on. It bugs my OCD that it is the only warning(?) light illuminated on the dash. There does not appear to be a factory / dealer option to change this. I would be happy to hear more if anyone finds a solution.

I got the reply from Toyota stating that it is designed that way and will stay on Prados.

They are aware of the Manual error describing the functionality of the light switch and advised that the manual will be corrected at its next revision to reflect the actual settings.

Still, very annoying. My wife switches them to the "second" position making only the "parking lights" on when driving.

My take on this is if it is a safety feature, why not on all cars then? If not, why on Prado only?
