Hi, just returned from the back of flooded NSW. Lots of roads closed and red mud roads (1500K). On the way around the affected areas we ended up with a stuffed starter motor (MY14- 65k odo). Maybe caused by dust and water egressing??? We got a tow to a NRMA service centre and the next day had a new starter motor (Thinking we had a genuine part) and set off after paying accommodation and 2 days car hire! Stayed in Narooma for a few days then headed back to the gong....and the new starter shorted out again, warning lights etc. Luckily we were almost at a Toyota dealer. Turned out that the starter was a chinese version and had shorted out from a piece of loose copper from the armature. Fortunately I picked up the original starter. The auto electrician and I did a comparison of the two units and scrapped the aftermarket one and rebuilt the original using the armature from a Hilux starter.. So far all is working fine. In the last two years we have driven about 10k of dirt roads. I have been told that the dust and moisture was the likely culprit causing a short with the initial one (hoping). If dust and moisture is the cause, then i'm keen on an aftermarket military style upgrade and while i'm at it i'll upgrade the alternator too. I have heard that their is a manufacturer 75/79 series but have not found anything for the prado. Any ideas? crano (i have photos)
