Factory USB connection

Has anyone removed the factory USB port? I would pop mine out and check but it is with Toyota getting the turbo replaced. Looking at a different head unit and I am told that the factory USB which is in a switch blank is part of the multi pin plug and cannot be reused. Makes sense however can the existing port be removed from the blank and replaced with a cable or adapter?

I found a post which identifies which wires correspond to a standard USB cable so full steam ahead.
