just a quick question, i had a look at the new 150 today, thinking about trading my 05 VX, talked to the salesman about it and he just said yeah mate it's over there your welcome to have a look and went back inside to the airconditioned comfort.. BUT i was looking in the rear of it and there is a 3 pin power socket, was wondering if anybody knows if it is hooked up to say the battery or they have put it there so you may be able to hook something up yourself at a later date? i couldn't find the salesman to ask him..

Re: power socket prado 150
Yes it is a 3 pin standard Australian plug and from memory ( I had a quick look on Monday and the spec sheet doesn't say) the plug says it is rated at 120 watts so not very big.Originally posted by lawranceAny idea how big that inverter is? Is the 3 pin plug for Aussie plugs or will it require some kind of adapter :?:

Re: power socket prado 150
Your only going to power up things like chargers, lights, stereos and the like. To power up a lappy power supply your gonna need more grunt than 100W with 500W more the likely figure needed.Originally posted by lawranceI went to Nunawading Toyota today to have a quick look at the Prado 150 series. The power socket is indeed for Aussie plugs and I think it would be really useful for plugging in laptop power adapters...
Nonetheless, this is a great inclusion to the vehicle, I'm sure it wouldnt be too hard to rip out the stock one and put in a bigger one. I didn't look today Neil to see if the one at the Spring Festival today had the 12V socket in the back still. Did you happen to notice?

Re: power socket prado 150
It's called OHMS law. Increase the voltage by 20 times 12V to 240V and it decreases the current by 20 times and the reverse is true if dropping the voltage, current increases by the same ratio. It might be drawing 0.3A at 240 but it will be drawing 6A at 12 V so using the inverter isn't going to reduce current draw at the battery.Originally posted by YOOTYou should be able to run a fridge of that using the 240v mains cable, as a compressor fridge will draw on'y 1/10th is Amps on 240v. I think my CF-60 uses like 0.3-.7A on 240v compared with 3-5A on 12v.

Re: power socket prado 150
That and you will have losses in the inverter process, you don't get something for nothing. As a ball park figure invertors are around 85% to 95% efficient, you then have to consider the quality of its sin wave out put which can lower this efficiency further. Modified sin wave invertors when running fridge compressor will drop to around 70%-80% efficiency.Originally posted by stuart67It's called OHMS law. So while it is a nice toy to have fitted in the car I would be reluctant to run my fridge off it while camping. Charging the kids DS while touring sure thing.

Re: power socket prado 150
I'm sure when we all get a new 150
we can pull out the small toyota inverter
and replace in with a bigger 1000w :P or so fairly easily and power inverter straight from 2nd battery so power on all time not just when key is on. Running a 12volt outlet to the rear for running a fridge of your 2nd battery is a must anyway as standard wiring for 12v outlet in OLD 120's is to small. Power is at the plug 24/7 not just when key is on.
Just my thoughts anyway......

Re: power socket prado 150
Does anyone know if it is pure sine-wave or modified sine-wave ? I bet it is the latter.
Pure sine wve are better because it produces a voltage pattern very similar to the mains - but they are more expensive to make.
Modified sine wave supplies are simpler in design, but can cause a humming noise if you're running audio gear, and can possibly damage or not run correctly some equipment plugged in.
100Watts - yes only good for phone chargers and the like.Cheers, Wayne

Re: power socket prado 150
Yes but if a fridge draws only 75watts on 240v it is still less than the 100w claimed by the 220v rear outlet is it not?Originally posted by stuart67It's called OHMS law. If 100watts/220v = 0.45Amps, then the power cable from the inverter to battery has to rated to draw 100watts of 12V which is 8.3Amps, most cars have a 10Amp 12V 120watt plug, which while the engine is running should supply enough current to power the fridge, if the inverter is running off a dual battery this would *almost* be enough to do it.
I know you or I would never do it because the stock wiring is never enough, but it could be done. Its not impossible.
