  • Wiring from rear view to tow bar

Having put a deposit on a van with a rear view camera fitted, the head unit is a clip over the rear view mirror style. Ideally I don't want cables hanging down from the mirror to the dash & wanted to know how difficult it'd be to run wiring from the mirror to above/into the map light area and then get them to the tow bare area?

    Any advice appreciated.

Vanders, I cannot help with the wiring to the rear view mirror specifically but I am running a rear view camera on my camper. Depending on the brand some have a waterproof connector which can be used between the trailer and tow vehicle. I did mine a bit different because the cable was way too long. I cut the cable and fitted a male Deutsch plug on the camper and the female on the Prado. Thes e are waterproof when connected and I have a dummy socket on the camper for when it is not hooked up. I ran the cable up through the grommit where the trailer wiring runs (this allowed me to easily pick up reverse power and earth) and then under the side panels and scuff panels up to the head unit. It is easy to get a cable through this route. Presumably you could continue to run up along the left side and A pillar keeping under the airbag wiring and then along the roof trim to the mirror. Because the head unit allows you to select the camera at any time I am about to change the trigger from reverse only to a switch in the centre console. That way I can use it as a rear view mirror while travelling.

      Vaders,
I recently installed a dual camera dash cam. You can remove the map lights from the roof and pass the wiring through from the top of the windscreen into the headlining. I then used a strip of yellow tongue and pushed it down the centre of the roof to the rear door. At the rear door remove the door seal and run the cable down from the roof along the side and down to the floor. Thee should also be a large grommet in the floor where you can get your cable to the rear tow bar.

      Cheers,

      Scott
