How to get around a failed alternator in the bush?

Old thread, but I actually had this happen at the bottom of Big Red, alt lights coming on.
I had a water bladder set up with a pump, so put the hose in the back of the alt, which cleared the alarm and head off accross the simpson.

2 hrs later the warning light lit up like a christmas tree on the dash, I pulled the alt and found the brush module in the back (pictured above in post 14) can be pushed up when you tighten the screws to allow the carbon brushes to touch the stator.

This got me through the desert.
Once I made Alice, I got a new set of brushes, but I made it another 5000k on the brushes that decided to reach end of life at the bottom of big red.

I believe that toyota designed them this way for this very purpose.
