  • Torque converter lock up kits

    Hey
So I have a 2.8 prado. Wondering about a torq conv lock up kit. Which to use and why? Are they worth the money. Do a big of towing on holidays at about 1t or there abouts.
    Cheers

I have installed a lockup kit from Richards Auto. Holds lock quite well in S5 when towing, and, with the addition of an auto trans cooler, has helped reduce torque converter temps by about 30C. Very happy with the result.

I e-mailed Richards over a week ago, wanting prices for LC200 and for my 150.
No reply yet. These companies need to get there act together.
I did the same to Wholesale Automatics, took them a week to ask what car I wanted to fit it in !!!. So they’re not on my shopping list.
As the reports on the Wholesale product also vary considerably, I was opting for Richards which so far has excellent feedback.
Would be good if they answer.
Mangoat I can’t see you needing a lock up for towing 1t. I just towed my 1.5t camper and left it in 4th for the hilly stuff. She went OK.
The car has towed my 2.5t van too, same story, left it in 4th but I think a kit would help when towing that one.
The 200 is really annoying, it won’t even grab 6th until over 100 and drops out of lock at any opportunity. Towing in 5th doesn’t work all that well either, programming is just wrong. It really needs a kit.

From what I have read the Stockwell kit ticks most boxes with the option of high and low speed lock up if required.
Definitely better reviews than Wholesale Auto

Had Richards in a number of vehicles, removed them due to continuous ECU codes. Its a well known issue with them. Now have stocklock in th 200 and Prado, perfect from day one.
Wholesale auto didnt even get a look in as the tech they use is way behind the times.

Thanks for that Piggy. I thought Stocklock was Richards re-branded, will have to investigate further.
Did you need the computer modified with the Stocklock or was it plug and play?
Richards now advertise that pre 2016 LC200's will need their computer modded to stop P codes.

Richards' one installed. 20000 km with the kit and not even a problem. Best mod on my prado so far.

Stocklock is its own brand and totally different in the way it locks the trans. (hence no error codes).

No modifications to computer or vehicle programming needed with Stocklock.

Richards "turn off" the codes from ever being able to display from your ECU. That is how they fix it.. I didn't like that idea so another point on why I went with stocklock. Codes are meant to display for a reason..

Thanks for that feedback Piggy, just the info I was looking for.
Plus you have one in a 200, exactly what I need.
Would like to fit one in the 150 too but it's not towing heavy, so back a cog will do for her on the big hills.
