  • 2019 Model LED head light failure & rejected warranty claim

Whilst driving through Cape York recently my headlights on a 6 week old Kakadu failed completely. On return to the dealer they claim both sets of lights and their ECU units need to be replaced due to driving in water and that Toyota will not replace the lights under warranty. They kindly sent me a quote for just over $5,000 to do this for me.

We did a number of creek crossings but nothing reckless or extreme, or that would require a snorkel. When I noted that Toyota sell a factory snorkel accessory, apparently that is not intended for water crossings but to reduce dust intake and some other rubbish.

Has anyone else had their LED lights on a 2018/2019 GXL, VX or Kakadu fail and, if so, what has been the response for replacement under warranty.

From my perspective the lights are clearly not fit for purpose if you cannot get them wet in a full sized 4WD and they cost over 5% of the vehicle purchase price to replace.

    Ouch! Thanks for the heads-up.

Their own specs claim a wading depth of 700mm (at least for the 2017) so if you were under that I think you'd have them.

Where is the ECU and its height for the headlights and do you have proof that you were below the wading depth?

Like dbc said, at or under 700mm and they are obligated to repair under warranty. If the headlights and ECU units are above this height than you may be out of luck. In saying thay 5k sounds crazy. Might be able to source parts from O/S and get a auto elec to do the job for cheaper. Either way it sucks and being Toyota you would think the lights and electronics would be sealed units but I guess not. Might be worth checking to see if the components are sealed to see if there are any defects there. Who knows. Good luck getting it sorted. Sounds very frustrating.

struth , for that price i'd be pulling them apart / cutting them open and wiring in something else. If you get somehthing from OS make sure its from a RHD market as the light spread patterns would be different

How high are the headlights above ground? If more than 700mm (Claimed wading depth) then your'e out of luck and need to take it on the chin. Partsouq and amayama will be the place to find cheap replacements. So how high was the water really? Over bonnet?
