  • ARB air compressor blowing fuses

My ARB air compressor ( under bonnet mounted thanks to AMTS mounting bracket) has suddenly started to blow the inline 30amp fuse. I used it to pump up my Fathers in laws spare tyre a month ago and it blew half way through ( blessing in disguise really could have been in the middle of nowhere ) and since replacing the 30 amp fuse its blown two more times. Anyone experience this before or know what would be causing this symptom? Is my little old ARB compressor finally cactus? It would have to be at least ten years old.
Last electrical thing touched on the car was a Redarc brake controller and that was 3 years ago so its not like i can blame myself for fiddling with it.
I noticed the blue light is out on the switch that turns on the compressor as well. -is there some sort fo inline fuse around that might have blow and is causing the issue?

I would think the most likely cause is the the compressor is partially seized, does it sound different or take longer to pump up your tyres.
If there was a short I would expect it to happen quicker. Perhaps check the earth/negative as well.

Check the fuse holder. where the fuse pushes in might be loose and that can cause fuses to blow.

Seen ARB do this a bit, they get older or the crank pin is bending in it (Common issue apparently) and causing it to draw more current. The crank pins snap off if doing higher pressures. I've had one do it and was replaced under warranty. They don't like going much over 50PSI constantly.
Chuck an Ammeter on it and see what current its drawing, rate your fuse higher if wiring is up to standard.

Thanks folks - i will try those actions. The compressor made no weird noise just stopped. Replacing the fuse and turning it on makes it blow the fuse with no obvious movement sound or anything. Replaced the relay no difference.

I wouldn't be surprised if its locked up and jammed, hence huge current draw.

Just stopped, blew fuse and continues to pop fuses equals a seized compressor most times.

Pull the end plate off and see if its the infamous bent crank pin.
