  • Variable charge voltage 2019 prado

    Hi all,
recently noticed something on my car that I need a bit of help with.
Had a slow start on the car the other day, hadn't driven it in a while and the voltage cut off on the dash camera was set wrong.
Took it for a drive and noticed the charge voltage didn't get above 13.1 volts (ARB Linx) Stopped into Supercheap and got the battery tested and came back 'good with a charge voltage of 13.7v.and a CCA of 554. I then drove it home and noted a normal 13.7-13.8 charge voltage.
Topped off the battery water and left it on the CTEK overnight with no errors from the charger.
I have now noticed that when driving around I see a variable charge voltage from 13.0-13.7 which fluctuates. Does not change with RPM. Will be 13.7 at idle and 13.0 when driving but also flips back and forth on those numbers.
when I got home (5min drive) to check the accuracy of the linx with a voltmeter the linx showed a consistent 13.8v which was confirmed by the multimeter.
The other thing I have noticed is my second battery (connected via a dcdc charger) will show 12.7 when I start the car but drop as low as 12.1 for the first few mins of driving until the main battery's has enough charge voltage to start the flow of charge.
    Any thoughts appreciated.
    hopefully it all makes sense!

    Cheers

The charging voltage is regulated to reduce fuel consumption, battery charging is not the priority. I run a diode in my older (2010) Prado to boost charge voltage, not sure if that is possible on the 2019?

Worked great in my Prado, but I would contact them and confirm if this suits your 2019 model: https://www.sidewinder.com.au/page159aa.html

Thanks for the replies. I had the diode on my old 2010 prado and worked great. Apparently they don't work in the newer ones though. I've never seen this happen before and I have a feeling it may have to do with the flat battery I had the other day.
I have read somewhere that low charge voltage can be due to a dying battery? Is that a thing?
