  • 2023 Prado Taking Power from Standard Battery Terminal

Hi All, I have a 2023 Prado 150 GX and having trouble working out how to take a large power feed (or better multiple feeds) off the standard positive battery terminal. It has integrated fusing as standard which makes it very difficult to get a big ring crimp onto the terminal.

I want to run a single large cable to the rear of vehicle (via an ANL or mega fuse) and a smaller feed to distribute to midi fuses on top of battery for spotlights & under bonnet compressor.

The only way I can see to get a single large feed is to grind down the outer circular part of the ring crimp to fit in the cavity under the nut and then raise the standard terminal up higher on the post to provide clearance for the crimp lug. One of my photos shows the idea without having yet removed the nut.

Does anyone else have any other solutions please?

    Cheers.

Have a look at these as it may be what you are after Two Up - Ultimate Battery Terminal Upgrade POSITIVE - JTS 12volt

Relocate your original terminal onto the battery type post and put additional circuits on the second threaded post.

There are lots of different suppliers of these so look around (the link is only to show you what they are).

This is the way I went, easily added a fuse in at the same time. I used the blesea one but you can get others now.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I happened to have already looked at that exact model and got excited at first but I don't think my OEM clamp will fit on the new post due to the raised section that goes around the original post. Maybe the new post and bolt can be removed and refitted on the other side of that clamp??? I have not been able to find any similar models that look like they will fit but I will search more.

Has anyone else with a late model Prado with similar battery post added a second battery? How did you connect it to the main battery positive?

Sorry, looks like I was typing my response when you responded so I missed it. That looks like a decent idea. Do you think the steel washers and smaller contact area will limit you at the higher current levels (I see you have a 150A fuse & chunky cable). What is the max current you draw and does the joint get hot?

Have seen over 100A, slowly dropping as aux battery charged up from quite empty, for an hour or so. Doesn't miss a beat.
It feeds a 25mm sq double insulated cable, goes to my aux battery through an isolator.
If the thin strip in the fuse can handle 150A, that bolt/washers will handle much much more.

Thanks for the help guys. I found a battery terminal that is similar to the "two-up" but has larger spacing (OEX ACX0043 available from Repco or Napa). The casting was a bit rough so I decided to mill the contact surfaces flat. Overkill perhaps.

I decided not to use the battery post that it comes with and totally replaced the original battery post which worked well.

Those look ok, nice and solid, still means that you have to figure out a way to fuse it.

Very true. I could still use your terminal mount fuse solution with my new battery terminal but I may just put an ANL fuse. While I will carry spares, I suspect I would have an easier time finding an ANL fuse while travelling though I have not confirmed that.

Yep I had those exact thoughts, so i carry two of each spare (I have a dual terminal fuse mounted on my AUX).
Have never needed one in 5yrs, so sized them well. They are more widely availably than you think though, but I wouldn't expect to find one in birdsville.

Kaon make a battery fuse mounting bracket, goes over the stock tie down.

Yes, I already had that Kaon page open but will make my own mount. Cheers.
