  • Home Baked - Dual Batery Setup - V6

Hi Folks, here are some pics of my dual battery setup.

I am running a Pirhana DBE180s Dual Battery System and All Rounder 80AH Battery.

I have installed two Fuse Blocks for accesories that are both fed from the aux battery - one is constant 12V and the other is acc switched through a relay.

Since no one on this forum seems to know where a 12v acc line is the the engine bay (Petrol) I got this from the cig socket on the centre console and at the same time wired the socket so that it now gets its power from the aux battery.

In the next couple of weeks I will be installing a flush cig socket in the rear cargo area (off the constant 12v fuse box i installed) for the fridge, and running wires from aux battery (40A circute Breaker) to anderson plug at tow hitch for the camper.

Here are some pics - You will notice I chose not to pay $180 for some fancy branded dual battery tray  Instead all I had to do was buy two cheap galvanised brackets (bunnings), a plastic Battery Tray and some battery hold down bolts with clamp (Super Cheap Auto).

Hold Down Bolts and Clamp - DBE180s DBMS - The tray in the pic is a metal tray but I returned this one for a plastic one when is discovered that the Prado already has the points for the clamp bolts the grab onto for holding the battery down (as if it could have been a factory option)

Here you can see my inexpensive custom bent galvernised bracked to move the ac line out a tad.

    Bracket for Power Steering Resiviour.

In this pic you can see where the battery clamp bolts hold down.

80AH AllRounder Installed - Will be upgrading to 105AH AGM soon.

Pirhana DBE180s DBMS installed on Drivers Side Quater Panel

Fuse Blocks the one on the left is the acc Switched 12v with the relay next to it and the one on the right is constant 12v - I chose to mount these on the passenger side because when I start installing accesories like uhf and the 12v socket in the cargo area then they will be fed though grommet on passenger side of firewall.

    Hi Gavin

Well done, just one bit of advice.

Swing the battery around so the positive terminal is away from the body, one small bump and the battery will short out against the body especially with no metal tray to hold the battery firm.

    Regards

Thanks Dereck, thats good advice about the positive terminal and I will turn it around (the little things :-) )

On the battery being held down though - you may have missed something on my install - The plastic tray is simply a tray that the battery sits on and has nothing to do with holding it down - this is done using the existing factory Points as per the factory battery on the passenger side...

A caution to those using metal trays bolted to a relatively thin and flat metal and with the battery strapped to that - I have seen at least 5 vehicles where the sudden bumps or simply were and tear over time has caused fitegue in these setups and the set-nuts that the metal trays screw down to begin to tear out.

The vehicle already has points to bolt the battery down to from the factory - Why not use them ???
