  • After much deliberation have just about decided on the purchase of the Extreme Electronix GPS unit for the 150 GXL and would appreciate feedback now that some have had the unit installed for some time. Basically I would like to know if people are still happy with the unit and specifically:

    1. There has been a bit of talk on some sites about the Toyota reversing camera requiring some alterations (as outlined by Brains in his very comprehensive install.). Is this much of a problem or is it easier to use the alternate camera?

    2. I read somewhere that these type of units take some time to boot up, meaning the reversing camera is not available if you want to back out as soon as you start the vehicle. Is there much of a delay with the Extreme unit?

    3. There has been quite some discussion re the hazard flasher and parking monitor switches being on the left rather than their original position on the right of the dash. Do I understand that the switches don't fit properly on the left or is it just a matter of aesthetics?

    4. Some people have been a little disappointed with the radio reception of the unit. Is this across the board or just with some installs?

    I appreciate your thoughts

    Regards, Bennlexx

    • Reasonably happy with my Exreme Electronix unit. Better than the standard Toyota unit in that you can update the maps via the micro-SD card. Better value for money than $2500 for the OME unit. As for your questions..

      1. Not much of a problem. Preferred the original camera over the supplied unit.

      2. Yes they take a little time to boot up the maps/find the GPS, etc(it is a computer after all) But the reversing camera is available pretty well straight away. Turn the ignition on, put on the seatbelt, select reverse and watch the screen and mirrors as you reverse out the garage.

      3. The switches fit (in the VX anyway), but not very well. Try to source one for a LHD Prado overseas.

      4. The radio reception could be better. I lose FM stations about 40kms sooner than the OME unit, AM stations not so far. I haven't tried an external aerial as I use the iPod when reception is poor.

          4. About tv digi box. Any comments, wich type of antenna works best way and would be nice looking also

          • I'm getting tired or everyone jumping in my car asking why there is a hole in the dash. Anything further on sourcing a LHD Switch? I might just have to bite the bullet and order at the stealership!

              • Have just installed my Exreme Electronix unit into the GXL and am very happy with the result. Thanks everyone (particularly Brains) for the detailed installation instructions. Still have to do something about the powered antenna and work out how to install OziExplorer. What size SD cards are people using? Also have to work out what to do with the hazard switch. Have noticed in some of the pix that people have the switch sitting pretty flush. How have you managed that? On the back of the original radio there are two 'antenna type' plugs. One is the antenna and the other is similar but a little smaller. Anyone know what the second plug is? Has anyone worked out how to use the original Toyota microphone or are you using the one that comes with the kit? And last question ... following Brains changes to the wiring to use the Toyota rear view camera is there still a problem re the 6v/12v issue mentioned by some.

                • Some answers for questions above for install to 2012 GXL:
                  - No need to change voltage for reverse camera
                  - Yes, the FM reception is pretty ordinary, however I recently added a antenae booster for $12 off Ebay and it does help but reception is still not as good as original Toyota stereo
                  - I'm having constant problems with unit having a memory dump. It loses all preset radio stations, time etc, plus the unit freezes - unable to select any Nav selections or change radio stations. On advise from Asad, have updated software, reformatted device etc about 4 times now and still no fix. Latest solution was to return unit for repair. Find this unacceptable as while unit is returned to China I will have to go several weeks without anything in dash.
                  - LHD hazard light switches can be found in UAE/China from genuine Toyota dealers

                  • Thanks Renno. Good to know that there isn't an issue with the rear camera. The bigger picture is a huge improvement over the small Toyota screen. Do you know of any contacts for LHD hazard switches. There's been discussion on this site about them but have not seen any actual contact. Hope you get the 'freeze' situation sorted out.

I came across these today as well. I have just emailed him to see if the fascia's are a standard double din size and if they are available without the GPS system.

I would like to get one to see if it can be modify to 7 or 8" touch screen.

                            • Hi Brains, I have got my head unit all working that was easy, but I did not understand your instructions on hard wiring the factory camera,
I think there is a few steps missing, can any one help me please?

                              13. Locate the screen wiring loom. The wires in this loom that will be used are the factory fitted Reverse camera signal and power and the Reverse power from the vehicle.
The Reverse power is the red wire 2nd from the end of the edge of the plug next to the white wire. This is the wire that I used to power the camera as well as trigger the head unit to switch to the reverse camera input (CCD).

                              14. In this wiring loom unwrap and locate the black sheathed cables; this sheath contains the reverse camera wires.
                              Red – Video signal
Purple (black tape) – Video Shield
                              Black – Reverse camera positive
                              White – Not used.

                              15. This diagram shows the wiring looms A and B connected; there are two factory plugs that do not connect to anything. This is correct and is not required. Tuck these in behind the dash out of the way.

                              16. I hold no responsibility in any actions or work you perform or have performed on your vehicle.
You are responsible for cutting or having cut any factory looms or wiring in your vehicle. This may void your warranty. I accept no responsibility for any damage caused.

These steps are just showing what actions I took. I cut the wires identified in Step 14. Insulated the wires at the plug end and connected (soldered and heat shrinked) the purple and red wires to the RCA cable that was prepared in Step 12. This RCA plug wiring was then connected to the RCA socket in the Video Loom (Step 11). I connected the Brake (green wire) to a constant earth so that DVD would function always.
