Re: Dual Battery TD 150 GXL

    Drivesafe,

Thanks for the warning re test light. Actually mean for use on trailer lights rather than the vehicle. Yep, multimeter for the Prado.
Had a good laugh reading your post as I formed a mental picture of someone probing a wire, and "BANG".!!!!!!!
That would make the heart beat faster. Funniest home videos?

    Greg.

Re: Dual Battery TD 150 GXL

Hi Greg, I heard about the potential danger a little over 20 years ago when one of my car alarm trade customers had gone to one of their customers, a mobile phone installation company in Hornsby. Remember this is the days way before Bluetooth and mobile phones were the size of a house brick.

The mobile phone installation company had just attempted to fit a mobile phone to an Audi Fox and had tripped the air bag. No one was hurt but at that time it was $14,000 to replace the Audi’s air bag and that hurt the pocket.

        Thanks Derek

Got the multimeter. It was a bad earth connection. Just ran a second earth to the engine block and now works perfectly.

        Cheers Scott

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

I recently got the ARB battery tray, cheers Big-Trev, and when trial fitting it there is a loom and a couple of rubber lines in the way to make it fit. How did you move these item so that it doesn't rub when a battery is fitted?

          Cheers.

Hi Fellas. Must say this thread is very lively. Full of "Techspurts" and others just trying to get along. One golden rule with automotive wiring - all components on the vehicle should be at the same earth potential. The engine is not the basis of the earth in the vehicle - the chassis is. There should be a real big mother of an earth cable between the chassis and the engine. The battery negative post should be connected to both the chassis and the engine. There should be no difference in the earth potential of the engine or the chassis when the starter motor is cranking. Stick to those simple givens and you will have no grief. Don't go racing out and throw out your probe-lamp. Every tool in your shed has it's job and place. A probe-lamp is brilliant when tracing trailer wiring - and doing a dozen other little jobs when you only have one free hand. A multi-meter is also fine (and cheap) but aint the be all and end all. It aint rocket science chaps. Just my two bobs worth from a grey haired ex-mechanic. Keep it sweet. Cheers.

              Hoags,

I presume you mean the wiring and the rubber lines on the drivers side, I just moved it out of the way and bolted the tray in place and made sure it was out of the way when I installed the battery. Ill try and get a photo tomorrow.

                  Hoags,

Just took the opportunity to have a look at the drivers side where the 2nd battery is installed. All I did was bolt the tray in so that the white earth wires were not impeded upon and the rubber lines just go over the top of the corner of the tray.

In The following two photos I have tried to show the front drivers side corner of the tray as best I can without removing the battery.

                  Hope this helps.

Well, those past 7 pages were an interesting read......
I'm also in the process of getting the 2nd battery fitted. Picking up my ARB tray tomorrow along with the SBI12 Redarc switch. The rest I will leave in the hands of my local autoelecy as he knows what to do from there and is the expert, not me.
I ran the same Redarc system in my 120 for 5 years and it served my purposes and never missed a beat running my Engel and Cb through the Kimberley and NT for 4 years and worked a treat !
                      cheers

Thanks, will be posting an update of the next bit of work for my dual battery system. I have run my Anderson plug to the towbar for charging the batteries in the trailer, but I have to connect up my circuit breakers and looking at installing an Anderson plug to rear cargo area. I have one of Sidewinders dual battery monitors to install. I will post the photos when I get time to complete this work.
