    Hi Ross,

Please excuse my ignorance, but what do you want the kill switch for ? I think I would be very cautious about "killing" fuel flow ....but I am absolutely no expert,

      Re: Kill switch

Whats wrong with the immobilizer system. It is part of the EC and the car is fly by wire, so there is no getting around it for joy riders and local thieves. Anyone sophisticated enough to get around it will probably be organised enough to just pull the car onto a tow truck anyhows and deal with it later.

      Just my 2c.

        Re: Kill switch

Dereki is right, the ones being stolen end up on the back of a tow truck. Even if you can lock the transmission in park, or in gear for a manual, the tow truck winch will still pull the vehicle onto the tray.

I have an after market alarm fitted to my 150, with tow alert, jacking alert, glass breakage detection, etc.

The best idea is to park in a way so that towing is not easy. Park with your front wheels turned towards the gutter, park in between other vehicles, don't park where your vehicle is at the front or rear of other vehicles along the street.

          Re: Kill switch

I think the point is that there have been many Prados stolen by smart thieves without a tow truck.

Apparently they rock a replacement ECU and the vehicle is gone (driven off) in short order.

Fitting a hidden kill switch should easily slow them up and IMO is a good idea if done well (undetectable switch and cabling) and with the knowledge of what is most likely to prevent the vehicle from starting with the original or replacement ECU.

And it's exactly for this reason I had an independent alarm/immobilizer installed.
I suppose you could call this an expensive kill switch.
Should the OEM ECU be replaced the car still will not start.

              Re: Kill switch

              G'day everyone,

I'm a 120 owner, but have posted in two 120 threads about kill switches. I used to have an old WB V8 ute and I had a kill switch running off the coil.

Running a switch off the EFI fuse is a very simple way to shove in a kill switch for the modern Prado engines. Just pull out your EFI fuse and try and start the car, you'll see nothing happens ! Can't stop a flatbed tow truck taking your car away, but will stop a walk in dirty thief real quick !

The only problem is getting the wiring in through the bottom of the fuse box, so it looks like part of the main wiring harness.

I'm ready to do this in my 120, but I've got no idea how the hell to pull apart the main engine bay fuse box to get to underneath the fuse panels.

Anyone got any ideas how to pull apart the fuse box, I haven't received any replies yet in my 120 posts !???

Yowie and Celwar, I'd be very interested to know what after market alarms/immobolisers you fitted ? The tow alert sounds very interesting !

Looking forward to your thoughts !

Read the 'stolen' thread, they are not being towed they are having replacement ECUs fitted.

Hopefully you received my reply to your P.M.

I spoke to the installer of my after market alarm, about fitting a kill switch as well. He told me there is no need to do so, as the manufacturer of the alarm system became aware that the crooks were using a replacement ECU, so the alarm system, whilst being connected with the Toyota alarm, runs an independent circuit as well, which means that if the alarm is activated, the crook cannot start the vehicle at all, and he won't get into the vehicle or under the bonnet without activating the alarm in the first place.

Hope he is right, however, he does his research about the products he sells.

This would also reset your ECU everytime you used the kill switch which is less than ideal. Fuel, starter motor, ignition circuits or neutral start switch might be better options.

                        Guys,
Many thanks for the interesting replies . You may have guessed it but my 120 was stolen with no sign of any break in broken glass etc .
A mate works at a Tojo dealership and he asked the service manager how it's done . He reckons that the ECU is tucked up under the dash and very difficult to get to so they're probably stolen by using a duplicate key or a tow truck .
A tow truck in my street would wake everyone up as it's dead quiet here so I don't reckon that's how it was done . The duplicate key , yes I reckon that's more like it as they could've rolled it down the street and started it round the corner . That's why I want to use a kill switch so a duplicate key won't get it going . Thanks for the suggestion to isolate the ECU at the fuse box , do you know if it will latch the warning light on requiring it to be reset by the dealer ?
What do you guys reckon about the "keepit" wheel clamps , are they are good deterrent ?

                        Cheers

There was an article in the paper a month or so ago about 4WD's being knocked off in the Sydney area and being shipped in pieces to the middle east .

As far as I can see, the Keep It Klamps are a good deterrent if fitted properly. A good quality lock and key, and no access can be made to the wheel nuts. Do not know how tough the steel is to prevent cutting by blade or grinder. The more deterrents, the less likely that a crook will target your vehicle, unless he is really determined to take it. Maybe leave a pet taipan snake in the vehicle.

Exactly how the pro's do it. An Toyota/Lexus OBD key programmer is only around $400US and easily available online. Everything else is old school screw driver in the ignition switch stuff.... once they have ignition power... plug in the OBD key programer....new transponder programed... hold it near ignition.. start engine: Gone in 60 Seconds or less.
If pro's want your car you can't stop them. You can only stop kids and joy riders.
