  • Second battery dimensions

    Gday
I was hopeing someone could help me out with a quick battery question. Will a second battery of the dimensions 310H x 170W x 210H fit into the 150 diesel ? Whats the biggest anyone has managed to fit ? I have read all previous battery posts and couldnt find dimensions. I am aware of the air con piping that may need to be moved slightly.

    Thanks for your replies
    Adam

    Re: Second battery dimensions

    I've got a SuperCharge Allrounder MRV50,

Length: 259, Width: 173, Height: 202 on an ARB tray.

It seems to be a pretty tight fit with the AC pipe to me, but I'm sure others have fitted larger

      Thanks BNEGXL

So it would seem the length of the battery may be my biggest issue ?

        Re: Second battery dimensions

        Yeah Adam, I think so,

The real issue seems to be created by the positioning of the AC piping, if you look at the pictures Brains Posted down the bottom of his Dual Battery thread of the English version of the 150, the AC piping seems to come up behind the Air Box where our version comes up right where their second battery is positioned and forward of the Air Box.

From the photo's it appears a N70 size battery (ie. 305 to 330 mm long) fits, unfortunately some Brain Surgeon decided that the Aus version should have different AC plumbing which restricts the space available. If you are comfortable bending the AC pipe I think you will fit the larger battery.

I wasn't too keen on bending the pipe, so went for the smaller battery.

I'm certainly not saying I'm right, it's just the way I was comfortable.

          Re: Second battery dimensions

I've ordered a GXL turbo auto and have been looking around for battery options. I noticed some instructions on the ABR sidewinder site about how to bend the ac pipe clamp thru 90 degrees. See the link:
          http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page169aa.html
and select the document entitled "Prado 150 Battery Cradle"
It explains it in more detail.

They also talk about the following:
Dual Battery Tray - Main becomes Aux (Option)

Due to size restrictions and air conditioning piping the new 9 ½ inch high cca battery shown is wired as the main
battery, this allows for a large N70 or bigger battery to be fitted to the main battery position as the new aux battery.

You can see pictures etc. on
          http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page190.html

would be interested on any feedback from anyone who has used this approach,

            Re: Second battery dimensions

I just did the install doing the ABR kit, which I can recommend for quality and ease of use.

I fitted an Amp-Tech D50Z which had an actual Length of 255mm, the spec sheet says 269mm. This involved only a very slight bend of the AC pipe.

You can fit an N70 battery but I would be very wary of bending the pipe the required 50mm or more, which some people have done. It is a long way to bend a thin alloy pipe and if you have a/c issues this could impact warranty.

I have found a much neater routing for the cables using the ABR kit, running the cable across the radiator. There is also no need to cut a hole in the large rubber grommet to run cables between the engine bay and the cabin. Instead cut off the small rubber knob on the grommet and it provides an accessory cable hole. Just put some dish detergent on the cables and they slide through easily.

I'll try to post some photos when I get a chance

              Re: Second battery dimensions

Thanks for the response Krypto. I would be glad to see a photo or two. As I understand it from reading the first link I mentioned in my previous post, they bend the AC bracket through 90 degrees and relocate the mounting bolt onto the side of the existing structure.

                Re: Second battery dimensions

Bending the bracket is a 5 second job, moving the mounting takes a bit longer.

I'm traveling at the moment so will try to post some photos when I get back.
