Hi people ,I have added a 2litre catch can to my girl and I have noticed a definite cooling in the return pipe to the motor .I went for the bigger one because I wanted the temperature to drop as low as possible to allow the settling of the oil into the bottle from the gas . I have only done a couple of hundred K's so its early days .I bought it on E bay as I couldn't afford the one you guys are using ie filter change over at $80.00 a shot..The can I have still cost over a $100.00 and it is fully sealed aluminum can with a drain pipe also with a level indicator pipe. I mounted it behind the air filter having to make a bracket for mounting it. One thing I felt I had to do is widen the inlet and outlet holes as they were pretty small when compared to the size pipe coming out of the rocker cover even though the hose are 15mm or 5/8. Hi Matty & Loz. I have only just added mine and have been watching the oil level indicator as yet it is a no show .We are having our 40k service done next week and I have asked my people to look for all the tell tale signs and to their credit they are well aware of what is occurring in the Prado diesel .Then we are on a 5-6 week trip towing a 19foot caravan interstate so I'm looking forward to the trip not only to enjoy the holiday but to see just how well or not the Prado will do . Matt, seeing all the water/oil mix that came out of your catch can..... when can you install one on mine?? those that have them on..... you must check them.... massive amounts of water after just 4 weeks...

I could be wrong here as I've never heard of anyone getting water out of theirs.... wouldn't this indicate potential head issues? Have u checked the condition of your engine oil? What about your radiator?[I]cheers..... Rob (macca)[/I]

Hi Guys
The water build-up in your catch can is normal
When the oil condenses it is cooling down and the air moister in the atmosphere is also doing the the same. Hence engines that do short journeys have to have more regular oil changes do to oil contamination. (Sludging of the oil).
Take note of how much water comes out of the tail pipe of a vehicles that only do short duration journeys. when they pull away from the traffic lights the water pours out of the tail pipe.
If a engine is allowed to get to full engine running temps then the access moister build-up from cold start is burned off and the engine oil life span is extended and minimal sludging of the engine oil will accure.
I have had my oil catch can now for over 11 x months and even though it traps allot of oil i always get 3 x more water than i do oil.
If driving the vehicle in wet season there will be a noticeable increase in water caught due to the damp atmosphere moister.

I've been reading post after post on the performance car forums and that seems to be what they are saying as well.
Its good to know that someone else is seeming the same thing as I am...
I wil be monitoring it regularly and keeping an eye on the coolant level as well, although at this time there does not appear to be any cross contamination...

So I take my first look into my oil catch can. I wasn’t expecting much, but there was more than I expected. This is after about 6,000km which included no towing and one trip into the high country where I did give it a hard time for a few days.
75mm of a clear lightly amber coloured fluid (measured) and about 50mm of black sludge that I had to shake out and wipe out with a cloth.

Yep, no longer thinking about the provent either... I had gone with the calibre as a trail, but no way I want all that draining back into the sump, wouldn't do all that oil much good at all!!!

If you have time for a read, have a look at the link on post 44. Part way down that page there is a big talk about baffles ect. Larger volume is more important.
