I have been using the Repco diesel 15w-40 oil in my vehicles for sum time now, and before you all faint, this oil is made by Penrite.
I just rang the 1800 number on the drum and it was Penrite that answerd the phone.
They told me that the Repco oil was simaliar but not quite the same as their HPR Diesel 15 oils, but it did exceed the recommended requirments that Toyota have in the owners manual. And Repco is a damn sight cheaper than the Penrite oils.

      Roo

I plan to do my own oil changes in between the 10000km Toyota services. I also intend supplying Toyota the same type and brand of oil to use at the warranty serviced, to ensure they fill the sump with the same oil and the engine will receive he same lubricant all the time.

So from brand new I am thinking Penrite diesel oil or Castrol Magnatec. I live about 160km inland from Newcastle in the Hunter Valley. In winter very cold start up temps around -2 up to 5 degrees on average. In the heat of summer we get regular mid 40's quite often. The Prado will tow a camper sometimes.

Thoughts on an oil grade and type ??

Castrol Edge OEX 5 40? Im fairly certain that is the OEM Castrol Product. The new Professional Grade 'Titanium', a bit expensive, but good stuff.

          Adam,

Been chatting with ########## comparing oil requirements etc. I will go for Castrol Magnatec oil in my new 150. Per usual I will change oils and genuine toyota oil filter every 5000km. I will supply the dealer with my own oil. I can get oil samples tested locally, so I will get it checked every 20,000km.

The only thing different I will do is drop the toyota supplied engine oil and oil filter at 1000km, like I always do with any new engine. This ensures any crap from the machining and build process is removed early on.

Asked my local Toyota dealer for Toyota oil so I could do an interim 5k service and they told me to buy magnatec as that is what they use at the dealership in bulk and they had run out of Toyota branded oil) I queried how this might go in the event of a warranty claim and they told me that they had been using magnatec since it came on the market and never used Toyota branded oil( yes I know Toyota don't make oil, but I've never had a dealer tell me that they use anything but the branded oil)
            Kev,

The Professional Grade Castrol oils(not available retail, only at workshops), are now filtered to 22microns. The world standard is 90 microns, which is what most other manufacturers adhere to. The professional grade also comes out with a flourescent green tinge. It has a dye in it so that technicians can check for oil leaks after running the vehicle. The oil loses this quality after a few hundred kilometres. These new features are also inherent in the Edge Synthetic Range which is what I use. OEX 5 30 from memory, I think I stated 5 40 before, but will check today. The biggest problem faced with a lot of the new generation common rail diesels is the DPF(diesel particulate filter). Using the incorrect oil can damage the DPF very quickly, which in many instances is a very expensive exercise. Castrol is one of the very few oil companies that work directly with the manufacturers to design and blend their oils to be compliant with their specifications.

Does the Prado 150 have a DPF ? i thought it only has a catalytic converter.

Good to know, make choosing oil a lot easier. Thinking of the castrol 5w-40 edge as the best all round oil.
