Simon, I just went to my local carline muffler centre and asked specifically to remove the original muffler and replace it with the straight through, you should be able to do the same at any normal muffler place.
As to the difference between just replacing the muffler and a 3" system, the muffler replacement definitely feels better than stock and the cost is substantially less than a full system, which made the finance minister happy.
For me the original system is stainless and mandrel bent, doesn't appear to have any restriction once the original muffler is removed other than the particulate filter so I am happy to just replace the muffler.
Probably horses for courses and how much you want to spend, unfortunately a dyno would be the only way to tell the real difference.

Kev, I feel you are correct. When I had my previous 4x4 I changed the OE muffler and that alone made a huge difference .The engine was a V6 petrol whereas this is a 4 .The noise level well I just have to try it I guess and as you have said the only way to tell the real difference is to do a Dyno before and after but I don't have the coin. Cheers Foxy

Foxy, Have you changed the muffler on your SX yet? If so, what type of muffler did you use and did it make any difference to the noise level?

Mines a 120 d4d, I'm doing the muffler mod on Friday. I'll let you know how it goes. But as mentioned above, exhaust places have pushed the 3 inch straight through to me too. But ultimately I just said to one will you do it or won't you? Its costing $150. I'll post up what I think over the weekend.
          Regards, Heath.

So as per my prevoius post, i had this done today. i Have to agree with both smakb and kev. For the money it's very worthwhile. The turbo lag is nearly gone, and it pulls straight of the line now. The car generally feels more responsive. For the cost of less than a tank of fuel, this is possibly the best value performance mod I have done. If you are considering it, I'd say go for it.
            Regards, Heath.

What about the noise?. Is there any increase in noise at all?

I noticed a little noise on mine, but I was listening for it, so not a good example. My wife asked when I was getting the exhaust done and I answered 'over a month ago'. She had not noticed.

If you had an otherwise stock car with road tyres I believe you would hear it, but not in a bad way. With any off road equipment adding to normal noise it is not an issue for us.

If the noise issue is of concern, find a local PP member who has done it and see if you can go for a drive around the block with them.

Personally, the benefit was so good I would be happy if it was twice as loud as it is.

As far as noise goes, you wouldn't even notice it.
                    Regards, Heath.

Basset ,Mate I have dumped my OE box and put the 21/2" high flow on and my lady hasn't said boo .So the noise is not an issue anybody knows women have acute hearing if you know what I mean, especially after 40 years .Anyway I haven't had the opportunity to go for a run but when I do I'll let you know but there is a difference especially when I give her a bit of stick . The noise is okay if fact it sounds a little ballsy.
The box I had on hand was a new one with offset in and out and about 14" long. Don't ask me what that is in Cm's I wouldn't have a clue. I hope this is only temporary as I want to go 3" asap but I have to save my pennies. I have noticed that someone somewhere has said that a dump pipe may not be necessary, anyone heard of this ?? Cheers Foxy

Basset mate I have just got back from a quick and short trip towing my van and yes there is a noticeable difference in pulling power and just cruising.I was sitting on 90-100 K no problems at all .On the way to the site she was using according to the readings of the Prado she was drawing 11.5 - 12 liters per 100 and on the return she registered 13 liters per 100. Our van is a 6.01m Coromal loaded would have to be over 2 tonne .There were times I had to look and make sure the van was still following me. So I'm happy with the box as for noise there was a little bit more especially when under load but that was expected .Have to save my pennies so I can go 3" all the way through. Mate someone has said the dump pipe upgrade may not be necessary, have you heard anything similar, people. Foxy

That's great Foxy. I am away at the moment towing a 13'6" Jayco Destiny Outback. Sounds like I will have to change the muffler to make towing that much better. Thanks for the info mate.
