    • Left a message on another thread before I saw this one. My mechanic has recommended I add an EGR blanking plate - he says no hole. Others say 7mm hole. What is the best approach. He said it might through a P0400 code from time to time but just clear it with the scan gauge.

      Thoughts?

It will likely throw it regularly, p0400
Also with full blank the turbo pressure can't whistle back through the hole the way it does.
        7mm works well.

If you want a full blank you can get the manual mapper, if you don't mind more stuff on your rig.
If you know in the long term the turbo not venting back will not cause any issues.

Yes he said it would throw the fault regularly. The less stuff "on my rig" the better. I will go with the 7mm.

          Thanks Anthony.

          • Hi All,
Long time reader, first time poster....

I am just starting to prado journey. Upgraded from a 2003 ZD30 Patrol to a 2010 Kakadu and after having to add many items to improve longevity of the overstressed zd30 one of the first things I am doing is installing the egr plate to stop the car eating its own poo especially after taking a look through the throttle body.

Anyway I came across this recently and was hoping others here with more technical knowledge than myself would like to weigh in:

            On their facebook page
            "New England Performance Tuning
            28 June ·
A few thoughts on EGR blanking plates:
            Most people that contemplate blanking the EGR on their modern diesel engine have seen these plates advertised before. They are the plates with the holes in the middle of them. Earlier EGR systems weren't all that smart so to speak, and didn't know if they were being completely blanked off or not. Modern diesels with a lot smarter engine controls now precisely measure the amount of EGR gas being delivered to the intake manifold. Hence if you completely block the path of the recirculated gasses, the ECM will detect a no or low flow situation, and bring on the CEL (check engine light) and possibly derate engine power as well. This brings me to the subject of blanking plates with holes in the middle. People have discovered that using a plate with a certain sized hole in it will stop the CEL situation from occurring and here's why;
To precisely measure EGR flow, the ECM uses a differential pressure sensor. The ECM contains 3D tables containing commanded EGR flow rates at any given rpm and load point. The differential pressure sensor's job is then to report back to the ECM what the actual flow rate is. If actual doesn't meet commanded, a fault is set. Now to create this EGR flow, exhaust gas pressure in the exhaust manifold PRE turbo must be GREATER than boost pressure in the inlet manifold. To maintain this positive differential, the EGR valve and a variable geometry turbo (VGT) are used. The primary job of the VGT turbo is for emissions. A secondary feature is fast boost response in transient situations, i.e. quick to come onto boost when the accelerator is pressed. The emissions role of the VGT is to provide more exhaust pressure (commonly referred to as 'drive pressure') than there is boost pressure to ensure a constant flow of EGR. It does this by varying the geometry of the turbine housings a/r. This brings us back to EGR plates with holes in them... What do you think will happen if you create a restriction in the EGR flow path?? If your answer is the differential pressure sensor will report to the ECM low flow, and the ECM in turn closes up the a/r of the VGT turbo to provide more back pressure and force the SAME amount of gas flow through the smaller hole, then you'd be correct.
So in conclusion, what you get by using a blanking plate with a hole in the middle, is a higher drive pressure before the turbo. This means that the engine has to pump harder in order to expel it's exhaust gases from the cylinder. That in turn creates increased cylinder and exhaust manifold temps. The turbo is also spun a lot faster by the increased heat and pressure (also providing more boost pressure as a result)
By using the plate, you've actually maintained the same amount of EGR flow, but increased the load on your engine and turbo."

            Thoughts?

Would using the ozbush do flicky and no hole alleviate this if it is an issue as surely leaving it with no block and eventually having the inlet completely gummed up cant be the alternative??

I already wrote a detailed reply which had some good info to help you all but it has vanished.

I'm pretty sure I read your response as well before it went missing. Could the above not be true for the new 2.8 1GD-FTV as its a different beast to the 3l 1KD?

If so mine has not changed since i fitted ristriction plate. My exhaust temps are pretty well the same (maybe 10 different ) and boost didn't change at all.

Yeah admin probably removed it, may have been a problem.
I'm just a simple guy & make lots of mistakes with this online stuff.

I have little expertise on 1gd, so not much to add, other than still likely they are dreaming.
I will write a full explaination on it elsewhere.

                    Sorry.

                    • Hi all,

I've got a 2014 facelift with 30k and have just purchased the blanking plate with 7mm hole. I've read through this post and am still trying to find a 'how to' to fit this? I'm somewhat handy with a spanner and would like to tackle this job tomorrow, but I would need a guide of what to remove and exactly where to fit the blanking plate.

Does anyone have a link to the best source of information to get this job done for the average joe?

                      cheers

                      • 1. Drain your radiator fluid.
                        2. Remove everything you can see that's bolted to the lhs of your engine block.
2a. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the rear underside of the inlet manifold and remove that if you want to clean it too.
                        3. Slip the plate into the spot where there is a pipe coming from the front of the block into the egr heat exchanger thingo.
                        4. Hope you took some pictures and notes good luck putting it all back together.

It'll take at least 3-4 hours plus another day if you do the manifold. It is probably the nastiest job I've ever done. You'll need all manner of wobbly sockets and triple jointed thumbnails.

Or just take it #### or the Roo, pay them some money and have confidence that the job will be done properly.

Sorry it really is a horror story.

                        • Thanks, ended up using a guide from chip-it to install. It required some modification of the blanking plate but wasn't too bad. The egr cooler needed to be loosened intake removed which provided enough room to slide the blanking plate between the block and the cooler.

All up took 1 hour but would be a lot quicker now that I know what to do. As I've only got 30k on my vehicle and it had minimal build up, I opted not to do a complete disassemble and clean.

                          cheers

                          • Hehe. Wise choice and well fast! I think some people have seen some lessening of built up gunk after the plate is installed so at those kms maybe not worth pulling the whole disaster apart. Unless it starts to get smokey your work here is done!

Dryer & powdery, a catch can will dry it up like this, it's still there & what not is going in your engine. Like dust, but worse. How's your rings? He's your valve clearances? Later......

Naaa you don't want to deal with that mess yuk, leave it in there.
