  • Oil vapours turn the soot into gunk which sticks....The drier the soot, the less chance of sticking. That's my opinion after cleaning EGR and intake myself.

Example - Dust will adhere to something the is wet more than something that is dry... Keeping it simple.

    • I have tried this, removing the oil with a catch can when running normal EGR. The soot was fluffy and thicker compared to tar with catch can. In my case was worse with the catch can (bugger).
Now run full block and Ozbush manual mapper and no catch can. Without the soot the oil can flow.

Just remember to drain out the intercooler every couple of years. If you think about it, the IC is a massive catch can. By blocking EGR, more blowby occurs due to higher pressure combustion of the cooler air so more oil mist makes it way into IC.
EGT's are a little higher as a side effect.

60,000kms on the clock, I was expecting a horror story like some of the posts on here. To my surprise, the egr valve was near on spotless! no hard build up, just some oil and soot! I stuck a long screw driver in with a rag attached and i managed to wipe alot of the shit off.

Fitted the plate, bolted everything back together, took it for a test drive and all good! no error codes! I did how ever, find oil in the intake. I read somewhere here that #### was against fitting a catch can? whats the reasoning behind that?

anyways it was a productive day, I changed the under body and under bonnet fuel filters, did the air filter and the cabin filter. This coming week my fuel manager pre filter and bracket should arrive, and next will be the oil change and egr coolant bypass.

One says to leave it alone, the oil vapours help "wash" the soot throughout the intake system. The other is drop a catch can in to stop the oil vapours to try and prevent the glue that is made. I think from the info that has been gathered if you're running a reduction plate for the EGR the oil vapours will definatly help "wash" the carbon gunk.

Personally I am waiting to be able to completely block my EGR system (manual mapper) and run a catch can. The reason this way is the best in my oppinion is the oil film in the intercooler makes it much more inefficient, especially with our front mount intercoolers where the oil will collect in the bottom of it. The only argument against this method is the upper cylinder is not getting lubricated from this oil vapour and it may cause slightly more wear on the valves and valve seats. I guess every thing has a down fall, you've got to choose what you think is best and hope it really is.
          Thanks Andy.
To be clear for all, My advise is not from one, but silly amounts of egr inspections, analysing, cleaning etc.
          Yes they all vary.
In the big picture, There is bugger all oil in the intercooler & most of the Intake.
Mostly it will accumulate the the joins, inside the rubber socks at each end.
Generally I do The injector job & egr together, this includes, compression test, valve clearance check etc.
I have found catch canned & dry soot vehicles very caked & less valve clearances.
The wet ones have better valve clearances.
Take most of the soot away (7mm plate) or full blank with mapper if you choose, not only is there no need for a catch can, it better to leave the Pcv alone for those above reasons. Pcv will evacuate the moisture from the top of the engine best! Reduce the moisture removal & risk sludge! It's only light sludge but I have seen also on these engines with catch cans, not all of them but some examples. (same oil services).
The pissy amount of oil will not hurt or affect your engine.
          The soot will!

          • Maat,

You are correct, #### does advise the use of the 6 or 7mm restrictor plate & no catch can. I have followed ####'s advice to the letter including using Pentrite HPR 15W50 for Qld ambient temps. From my background I followed ####'s reasoning that the upper cylinder & rings etc.require some oil. Additionally dry carbon could be mildly abrasive. I've almost done 10K since top end full clean & new injectors - oil is still a honey colour with just a tinge of black. Purs like a pussy ;-)

                • Has anyone used The EGR Cleaner (Spray Can) and sprayed the cleaner while the engine is running, I spoke to a mechanic about this and he advise me that the 150 Prado can only be spray through the Airbox. I recently cleaned my EGR and elbow last weekend and was wondering if this would be a good idea as a maintenance preventative to help with the build up. Also give the manifold a clean.

If you have had experience with this method could you please advise the brand you used and if you thought it was worth doing

                  Thanks All

                  • I purchased 2 cans of very expensive intake cleaner, sprayed through the intercooler and also direct to the mess. It just doesn't make any difference whatsoever. Don't waste your money. This isn't a grimey petrol motor it is like tar you could make roads out of.

                    • May be effective as a preventative who knows..?! But not a treatment.

                      • I have used the Wynns EGR cleaner, 4 cans straight into the intake after the intercooler, as well as directly into the turbo charger.

                        Useless.

The only way to a clean manifold is to remove and clean then put Anths 7mm restrictor or the full block with Ozbush mapper unit as i've done.

Good feedback mate, so the product did not clean at all?
                          Going to try
Hoping to get some improvement, lets see.

                            • Just went through a similar process with my 2012 - about 106,000kms, no catch can and about 4-5mm soot/tar buildup right through the EGR elbow and intake. No pictures handy but essentially the same as all the others that have been posted up.

Now it's clean, time to decide on the way forward to avoid having to go through the process again.
