Nope, light can come on for two reasons. The wiring on the top of the filter is a pressure sensor, if the filter is blocked the light comes on as well. Unfortunately jasaly you have just experienced the problem with the current Toyota service schedule. The factory filter should be replaced at 40,000km service in my oppinion. If it had been you would not have had this issue. The best solution is to ask for this to be done at 40,000km intervals and you won't have the issue. Not saying a auxiliary fuel filter is a bad idea, because it's not, but you still have to service the factory filter.

2014 GXL 150, fuel manager filter kit

Just purchased a 30 micron Stanadyne (fuel manager) kit to fit to my 2013 - 150 - went into our local diesel shop planning to fit a down stream unit - thinking this would pick up any problem once the fuel light came on and came out with an up stream unit. Logic works like this, Prado's run a lift pump not a push pump, so restricting suction can be an issue, this unit will grab the"sticks and stones" and leave the factory unit to get the gritty bits - and extend the effectiveness of the factory unit, it also incorporates a visible water trap that can be easily checked and drained if necessary - all made sense to be. Check the web site for the better know diesel shops and this seems to be the preferred option. Some suggest changing the factory filter every 10k Km and the pre filter every 40k Km - both best done by removing the units from the vehicle - an easy task and visually checking the water bowl every time you open the bonnet - don't just leave it to the service mechanic, you do lift the bonnet between services - Don't you?? You should! Service manager at local dealer tells me that the light comes on when the filter is clogged - get the filter changed ASAP and flashes when water is present - STOP the engine and call for help!
