The Toyota dealer must have been fibbing to me.

But anyhow, I guess dealers do not have dynos. But they can tune the chip themselves. I am not sure if they are required to download and save each tune characteristic though. So ... if a dealer does tune your D4D, then, it would still be under warranty IMO.

It's one of the lowest output 3 litre diesels on the market, why do other manufacturers feel the need to supply more if they don't need more than the D4D has?

You should call them, you're insight may save them a few dollars.
Cause it goes just fine, it doesn't need it. Some owners might want it, but that's not the same thing.

Not sure if they can actually tune it. They may have the option of loading different tunes onto the computer, but these will be set by TMCA. As far as i am aware Techstream does not have the option to vary tuning parameters. I highly doubt Toyota would allow this, have you seen some of the the techs, imagine the damage they could do if they were allowed change fuel loadings and timings....

Ecutek is software that has been developed to change specific parameters on a factory computer, thus developing a custom tune you can load onto the factory computer. It appears to be very successful on some vehicles and is the only way i can see any of us actually setting up a custom tune.

Generally it is very obvious to anyone looking at the ECU that it has been cracked and retuned. I doubt Toyota will do anything to the tune and I haven't seen a dealer with a rolling road dynamometer. If the tuning software is available to a tuner with a dyno then they can tune the engine. Whether they have the knowledge and experience to do a safe tune is another matter. I suspect if you call any of the better known tuners about the D4D no doubt they would be happy to have a go provided you park your wallet with the car. Still no guarantees.

Sorry but the vast majority of dealers I have dealt with know less about the cars I am buying/have bought than I do so if the salesman told me anything that is even remotely outside the norm I would forget it unless I could verify the same in several more trustworthy sources.

I may ring the person at the dealer and ask him where to go!!

He warned about chips, but said that programming the ECU was what he'd do, and that it was well worth it.

I'll ring him and find out more perhaps ...
