I run 5w during winter 10 in summer, 150 d4d 90,000km, Penrite semisynthetic. It's not the oil, that's the dealer handing ownership of the fault to you by using the well established mechanical principle of "bullshitting".

Smoking bad when decelerating and oil now low.

Yeh, its not the oil. 5W-40 will be fine. They are multi grade and have additives (polymers) that will moderate the viscosity. My guess is also its Turbo related. Possibly rings, but if it was rings I wouldn't think it would come good. I would be getting the turbo looked at so it doesn't spoil another trip, maybe next time you will be in the middle of no where.

Update: Got a new van that was to heavy @ 3.1 tonnes so the Prado's gone and good riddance. There's no way I'd be able to convince the Mrs to do another big trip in it, she'd lost confidence in it and to be honest so have I. Picked up a bog stock GXL MY16 TTD today and am putting this whole experience behind me. Mrs is happy with the return of a drop down tail gate and rear doors that unlock. What more could you wish for In regards to the Prado, which was on a oil consumption test. I pulled the dipstick and its an inch above full !!!? Either the dealer's overfilled it or there's fuel getting in there. Anyway, it's not my problem anymore.....Prado 150 2014 GXL 3.0 TTD - gone after it failed me bad. Now MY16 GXL TTD 200

It can vary a fair bit from that.
Good on you, moved on, that's the way! Go on enjoy!

It's like "Groundhog Day", went from a 200 to the Prado and now back again. The "old" 2010 200 is still in the family, the kids own it. The MY16 seems a lot quieter so there must be more sound deadening or something. As for the interior, it is an improvement over the 2010, with the leather bits etc, but not having steering wheel controls for the radio etc is a backward step. Toyota's way of making you go for the VX I guess. That aside, I really like it, drives like a dream.Prado 150 2014 GXL 3.0 TTD - gone after it failed me bad. Now MY16 GXL TTD 200
