Low RPM, Cold Rattle/Knock

I've started noticing a rattle/knock from my 3.0 D4D when at low-ish RPM - Above idle, but before 2.5k RPM. It only seems to be present when the motor is cold - not necessarily winter cold, just "not run in a few hours" cold. I had a chat with a mate of mine and the dreaded "I" word came up... I have 106k km up on the ODO and the last service was 6,000km ago.
Should I be worried?

Tested more thoroughly after work today. The rattle occurs between 1800 and 2500 rpm in 1st 2nd and 3rd until the needle moves off the cold marker on the temp gauge.

My 2014 GXL has only just clicked over 20K and it it noisy (as in diesel rattle/ticking noise) when stone cold. Soon as it warms up its quiet.

1. Have you had the Injector seats done under Tojo Recall?
2. Oil viscosity?

I switched to a 5W30 fully synthetic at last oil change and it is even quieter than when I had the new injectors fitted last year.

All dealers use the cheapest oil that meets the toyota specs that they get in bulk. I have had my Prado serviced at 3 different dealers. All different, 10W-30, 5W-40 and the local dealer not even a diesel specific oil. Dealers are only obliged to use geniune parts and coolants, oils etc. that meet the Toyota specs. Asked my Toyota dealer if I could supply my own oil and they said no as the could not warranty the vehicle work with own oil supplied.

My advice for you. Do it today, or morning of next business day after reading this.

Call your local Tojo dealer and speak to the service department. Give them your VIN and have them check for any outstanding recalls, particularly in regard the injector seats from back in January 2015. If it hasn't been done, they will ask you to book it in. You will be required to leave it overnight so that they can do injector feedback readings at cold start first thing the next morning. If any of your injectors are out of spec, they will tell you that all 4 should be replaced, which you should, whilst having the injector seats replaced. Your only cost will be the new/remanufactured injectors. Tojo will install them at no additional cost at the same time they do the seats.

Secondly, unless you live in the Siberian Tundra or Kalahari Desert, the recommended oil viscosity for the D4D is 15W/40. Many PP D4D owners use either 15W/40, 10W30 or 5W40. Personally, I have now switched to a fully synthetic 5W40 and have found it to provide a quieter cold start, generally quieter overall and potentially better fuel economy.

What a F@#king croc. If my local dealer told me that, the next thing they would see is my arse-end walking out of there. I have owned various makes and models and NO dealer has ever refused to use the oil I have supplied - so long as it is from an unopened container so that they can verify the suitability of the contents.

Just an update on this. I dont drive the car much during the week so fuel up is monthly if not longer. The last tank load lasted quite a while, just over 2 months. I started to run low a few weeks ago so I fueled up, BP Ultimate as usual. 1 Week later, quiet as a mouse when cold! Does diesel go "off"?

I have this same death rattle when the engine is cold and it is just getting worse. I replaced injectors about 15k km ago.

Any advice?
