I've got a 25 month old Prado (bought Dec 14) that has done 56,000kms.
For a while I've thought that it sounds very "rattly" when it is cold and the RPM is between 1800 and 2500 RPM. Once it warms up it sounds ok. I mentioned it to Toyota last time it was serviced (Oct 16) and got them to give me a printout of the injector feedback values. Number 1 injector was showing -1.9 when it was warm.
I've just had the car down at Mitchell Bros 4x4 in Brookvale (Sydney) to get my bullbar fixed and Aaron called me up to say that they think I've got major problems with the injectors because the engine is so noisy. He says that Toyota won't do anything until the feedback values go beyond 3 and that the engine may blow up before that (that's my memory of what he said a few days ago so if it's incorrect please assume I have made the error not him).
I've noticed it blows a little bit of white smoke when it's cold - nothing major but it's visible in the drivers side mirror.
So... I've got it booked into Chatswood Toyota on 31st Jan for an assesment. I'll drop it off the night before so they can look at it when it is cold. I'll ask them to give me injector feedback values when it's cold and when it's warmed up.
Do they normally fail this early? I'm concerned because in less than 3 months the car is heading off for a 3-4 month lap of Australia (Sydney-Perth-Pilbara-Kimberley-Alice Springs-Sydney) and if it dies on the other side of the country it's going to be a huge problem.
Any tips on how to approach Toyota so I don't get fobbed off? Should I ask them to do anything else?
