  • Big cloud of white smoke

So yesterday we set off home after a weekend of camping at a friends property. It was about a half km or so slow drive out of their property onto the bitumen road. Once on the bitumen I accelerated up to around 60kph and after couple hundred metres noticed a big cloud of white smoke billowing out of the exhaust. I pulled over with engine running and revved the engine a couple of times. In the time it took me to get out and walk to the back of the car the smoke had disappeared. My first thought was I'd blown a turbo or cracked a piston but there was no unusual noise and no power loss. I then drove the 180km home towing the Tvan with no further signs of smoke and no noticeable issues, i.e. no loss of power, no change in engine noise, no change in responsiveness, no apparent change in fuel consumption, etc.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

The previous day I started the engine and let it idle for a couple of hours to recharge the auxiliary battery. Could this have caused some kind of build up in the engine that was burnt off once I put it under a bit of load?

Unusual. Maybe soot build up from long idling.
I'm not sure if it would look more black I think, as it blew out.

Some weird brain fart? U get that sometimes.

Idling a diesel engine for an excessive duration is a sure fire way to kill it slowly by glazing up the bores. Google "wet-stacking". Diesels are meant to be loaded up, you need to charge your aux battery some other way mate.

Saw a 150 do this today pulling onto the pacific highway near coffs. I have no theory as to why

Could someone please advise how many amps the alternator of a 150 Diesel will output at idle.

          Thanks,

Yep, I didn't mean to leave it for so long, got distracted and forgot about it ops: It's the only time I've ever done it and will also be the last!

Check your brake fluid level. When brake fluid gets into the intake and burns, the white smoke is incredible. No idea whether that could have happened, but worth checking the level

What possible way could brake fluid get into the engine?

I'm interested in the answer to that one too. But if you do manage to do that somehow best to make sure there's no chlorine in there otherwise you're in for a whole new version of a detonating diesel!

After taking another look at the master cylinder on my 150, probably no way, as the booster is an electric pump. Very easy on a vehicle with a booster operated off vacuum from the intake system though when the booster diaphram leaks . Quite spectacular
So my theory goes up in smoke

Which engine is this? A 2.8L will do that after excessive idle. The DPF filter needs heat to burn off carbon, Idling just builds it up would let it burn. Then when you start driving burns off blows it out.

                        3 litre. No DPF.

Nothing. Still going strong 3 years later. Have never had the issue again

When idling an engine for prolonged periods in the future to keep an aux battery charged when camping in a heavily shaded area for example or if it’s overcast & raining on & off for days) my suggestion would be to use a brick (or two) or a stick to press the accelerator down a little to rev the engine at a constant 1500rpm or so. No harm then.
