  • What i have been told is an engine failure

    Hi there Gents.

A few weeks ago i was travelling on the Hume on my way back from NSW to Melbourne and prior to travelling on the Hume on some of the back roads i could hear the turbo wind up more then normal one hour into the highway drive all of a sudden the Cruise Control switched off and black and white smoke started coming out from the back and just as i got to the service lane the engine sounded like it was over revving and then a massive continuous knock in the engine until i switched off the engine. The car was towed back to a local town and i had the car diagnosed and they told me that piston 2 has no compression and in their view id need a new engine. The car is a 2010 d4d GX serviced every 10 000 without fail by my mechanic and every 5000kms by me which i change oil and filter etc. I then had the car looked at by my mechanic and he said piston 2 had only 10psi and that he thought my engine was gone as well. Is it possible the engine to seize that easy i always put Caltex Vortex Diesel and look after the car as i do lots of trips to NSW etc. Does anyone know how much another engine would cost and if i should even take it elsewhere maybe to a Diesel expert and see what he says etc. The car has 190.000 kms on it at the moment. What are your thoughts? Ive been told to get a proper answer they'd need to take the engine out and see how bad the inside of the engine is is that correct or should i just save my money and look for a new engine if the outcome is the same etc.

    Thank you

I would recommend you have a look at this thread... http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...a-holed-piston
And then order a new long motor.

      Another case of of D4Detonation...

It really does annoy me that this keeps happening and seeing new people to the forum complaining of the same Toyota fault.

I'm just grateful I found this site before buying a Prado. Keep spreading the word.

        .
It's one of the reasons I went for a petrol when I bought the 120 last year along the the great reliability of the old 90. Was talking to a bloke at the servo the other day with a 2010 d4d and just asked him if he was aware of the problems and what to look for to make sure it didn't happen. He was completely unaware of the injector/oil pickup issues so I gave him the basic rundown and told him to come to this site and school himself before it became expensive.

classic case of diesel runaway , where the engine runs on its own crankcase fumes till it self destructs. Its not quite the same issue that other D4D engines have , but one of the related causes. motor wont be repairable , time for a new long motor as others have mentioned.

My thoughts are, I wish Toyota warned people like I do & most of these can be prevented.
Second thought, if the injectors were changed at 120k to full DLC this would have been prevented.
3rd thought, I can hook you up with a new Toyota long motor installed for about 11-12k by a Toyota dealer.
4th thought, if I was you I'd be p.ming me your number before you waste any more $$$$$

              Hi Franny,

Sorry to read about your problems, all you can do now is talk to someone who knows about these things, Anth 120 has an excellent reputation on this forum.

Have a read of the posts on this forum and you will find that he has customers all over Oz and is regularly consulted by those who need help.

He does prefer to talk rather than type so why not PM him with your number and he will ring you for free

              good luck

Sorry to hear about the engine mate, i really hate to hear whenever one of these goes prematurely like that.

Anth saved me money on injectors, fuel lines etc. Sounds like he could get you the best outcome for the cheapest money in your situation too, i hope you are back on the road soon

Sorry to here what has happened, I agree with Anth. If you were on original injectors then this definitely sounds like injector over fuelling/holed piston. Not sure whether it would be engine runaway unless he noticed the engine actually accelerate without him doing anything.

Good to see you are contacting him to help.

Welcome to the D for detonation club. Sorry for your loss. At least you were near civilization when it went unlike mine out in the desert.

Just another couple of questions if you guys don't mind. Is the new 2.8L Prado any good or are these injector issues still a worry. I'll have to have a look at the service history to see if they were changed at 120.000kms as i bought the car at 121.000 so only now with a bit more knowledge on these cars am i thinking they weren't etc. I'm a bit upset with previous mechanics ive used too not picking it up but such is life.

Hard to find. I guess that why the come from far away :-)
You don't need an expert for many services, mainly for the specialist area jobs like injector diagnostics & replacement.
I'd say take it to someone who knows them well every 40k major service. The rest you should be able to find someone good enough to get the job done. A lot of diy service is the go.
I recommend DIY because The Industry is loosing technicians, apprentices are not getting put on, it getting worse.
This means more than ever they have to accept lower than ideal applicants to fill the positions.
Exactly why I cannot grow a business, I'd be forced to lower standards to do so, which is not an option.
