    Thanks.
Working the engine any harder isnt going to have any effect on the lifespan of the motor. All car manufacturers need to comply with emissions standards as well as a host of other requirements when developing motors. Just by changing some of the emissions output of the motor can have a substantial impact (positive) on the output of the motor without doing any harm.

Most motors are also not tuned to within a inch of there potential, rather they are often de-tuned so in 2 years time the car make can bring an updated model out with "revised intake and exhaust" claiming an extra 10kw of power. Once again none of these factors have ANY impact on the lifespan of the motor, PROVIDED THEY ARE SAFE. If some monkey with no clue decides to "Wind the boost up" without doing anything else, and having close to no idea, they could do a lot of damage.

In short though, these chips are going to have near-nill impact on the lifespan of your motor, a lot of them are just aimed at making the motor work more efficiently than there were designed to do so at the factory.

Sorry for what is undoubtedly a dumb question, but does putting a chip in void the warranty?

Yes and no it depends on what goes wrong, if you chip and something goes wrong with the engine then possibly yes (however i woud be removing the thing before you take it to Toyota) If is was another component of the vehicle that the chip has no bearning on say suspension then you could probably sucesfully argue a warrenty claim

Even removing the chip will not help, as they can download all info relating to the performance etc, and would pick up the use of the chip...

Thats not entirely true. The computer will log fault codes when things go outside of pre-defined parameters, but its doesnt log anything that could be picked up unless the scanner was attached to the car running with the chip installed. Even so, given how some of these operate, unless they are looking for it, chances are they wouldnt even know it was installed.

I think you will find that the DP Chip is installed "down stream" from the prado computer and therefore the computer does not even know it exists. It recives an iput from the Toyota module and modifies the signal to the fuel pump.it would be impossible for the toyota computer o log any fault codes directly relating to it.

Deasel, did you fit EGT and boost gauges? If not, how are you monitoring overboosting and egt temps with the additional fuel? If so, where did you mount the gauges? Berrima diesel ran the dyno over the 150 in one of latest fourby mags when comparing the Disco and Pajero. The Prado was around 102kw at the wheels and mentioned it was running fairly rich under load. By comparison the 2.7TD Disco was around 112kw with similar findings. The Pajero was about the same as the Prado in 4wd but 15% faster in 2wd.

I had a look at the Taipan XP exhausts website tonight. There was no mention of the 150 series although the performance graphs for the 120 Prado were suggesting around +14kw and +60nm for the exhaust, DP Chip, K&N filter & Safari snorkel (+11%, +15%). If the feedback on the Patrol forum is any guide, based on similar mods on a 3 litre Patrol, the biggest gains are in driveability and not necessarily the outright number gains. Most indicate you gain an additional gear, so hills that previously required a gear change, now do not. Interested to hear feedback on exhausts and chips from Prado owners.

4WD Action had a Prado featured a while ago claiming 680nm of torque!!! Be interested to hear how that's going reliabilty wise. You'd reckon that would have some repercussions on other components.

                    Re: Engine Chipping

I've been doing some research into Engine Chips and other engine performance mods. After a week in a TD Triton 4x4 twin cab ute, I was impressed with the 3rd gear pulling power and acceleration. Certainly made overtaking a much simpler and quicker process. In the same situations, it simply leaves the Prado for dead.

From what I've been told, standard 'chips' simply increase fuel pump pressure, some to a level which could stress the standard fuel pump possibly leading to premature failure.

I saw a product at the Sydney camping show by Steinbaur. This is a module which claims to increase hp and torque by around 20%. Each module is programmed for each application (engine type). They are designed to attach to the standard injector plugs and it has a computer which adjusts the timing, here's the spiel from the website, '– the actual beginning and end of injection timing - is not achieved by any "chip" available for diesel engines today. It's misleading to suggest so. With Steinbauer, duration is achieved by adding pulse width to a signal, i.e. at end of injection. This is not changing timing. That's best left to the factory ECU. This is their website, 'http://www.steinbauer.com.au/productsdetail.aspx?id=1'.

Apparently, fitting is around an hour in the 4D4. I've been lead to believe they can be swapped between vehicles with the same number of cylinders with the same brand of ignition system, eg TD Prado to Hilux, into TD Triton etc. All that's required is re-programming.

I have no affiliation with them, as I say, saw their products at the show.

Can anyone out there shed any light on this or other similar products?

Has anyone tried the VMN chip very similar to the steinbauer but only about 1000 bucks, ive got one in my hilux and ordered one last night for my 120, sick of the other chip throwing a wobbly and going into limp mode, went for a200 km drive yesterday in a mates 150 and guess what his shutdown too

Ok so I've been running the performance chip for a while and all I can say is its made a huge difference. I was sceptical that perhaps my passion was getting the better of me but after wifey jumped in she too was convinced. Do your research (Steinbauer and DP looked to be on par for us but we went DP for the drive train guarantee)
Fuel consumption aint much different yet though...sorry (I'm also running Scanguage II to keep Toyota honest).. but the torque...oh the torque. The chasm of turbo lag has been smoothed from idle and the top end is a lot more acceptable.

Ok so the chip has been on about 3 weeks. Overall I'm very impressed. I have been a bit 'pedal happy' given the extra power but its also smoothed out the initial off boost lag. In response to the last entry my logic says the Computer will struggle to identify the chip is in place as it sits "downstream" of it...(IE between the Computer and the fuel rail)

I'm looking at getting a Chip It chip for the older 1KZ. What I understand is they claim to have the only chip that will iteract with both the fuel and boost. Not sure on the fitting on the D4D but I believe on the older 1KZ that it simply connects into two existing factory plugs. Dollar wise this looks like an excellent option as it is tunable like the DP chip.

I bleieve most of the chips sit inbetween the ECU and components and intercept the signals from the ECU. The downfall of most of them is that if you hit up your Curise Control then the chip sits idle as the signals are different. Someone else can probably comment more on that. Not sure if the later model DP Chips still do this but I would assume they do.
