    Re: Engine Chipping

Regarding concerns about whether Toyota (or any manufacturer for that matter) is able to determine if you have a chip installed in your vehicle through diagnostic testing, the following information is taken directly from the DPChip website in the FAQ section:

'We often hear this old chestnut. "My dealer said they would void my warranty if I fit a chip." Please, if they say that ask for it in writing and forward to us. We would love to see it. Nothing can ‘void’ factory warranty just by fitting it, you need a problem to happen first and it needs to have happened because of the aftermarket product. The manufacturer is not liable for a fault caused by a non genuine part. However, unlike a bull-bar, dual battery system larger exhaust or even BAD fuel, the DPChip system is very inconspicuous and can be unplugged.

Furthermore even whilst plugged in it cannot be found through diagnostic testing. This helps make the DPChip impact in a minimal way greatly lowering the chance of a 'blame game' situation coming from the dealer. We know the DPChip cannot cause a problem because of the way it is designed and the way it works, coming after the ECU and leaving all engine operational safety and warning systems intact. In fact we are so confident that the chip can’t cause an issue that we now offer a new vehicle engine and driveline warranty.

Depending on the vehicle the DPChip is also completely removable, so as you could imagine if it was removed it would also reduce the stress involved if there was a failure, but again we just don't see failures due to the time and effort we have spent over many years setting up our product. In a real world situation, if your engine or driveline was damaged, for example your radiator has a manufacturing fault and runs dry and the engine over heats and is damaged (obviously not caused by the chip) then before taking the vehicle back you would simply unplug the chip and there is no trace it was ever there. Problem solved.'

      Re: Engine Chipping

As much as I want to believe a chip doesn't show up when Toyota plugs there computer in I find it hard to believe. I don't know much about Prado engines but one would assume somewhere programmed into the ECU's firmware that it would log and record erroneous values or a parameter that isn't what it should be. For example more power in most cases means more heat also a change in intake pressure, coolant temp and injection pressure ? All those before mentioned things have sensors which are monitored by the ECU so it can make adjustments to keep it within its programmed "rules". Even though a chip is put "downstream" all the sensors in the engine, transmission etc that feed data back into the ECU would have to operate within certain tolerances and something as simple has an a high exhaust temp reading could be a tell tale sign of an engine being tampered with. Not to mention more simple tell tales like what position certain plugs are in as they would know how they are from the factory.

I have searched the forum for some feedback from anyone using the VMN chip but haven't really found anything. From what I understand it modifies injector timing rather than rail pressure, like the Steinbauer.

Can anyone report on their experiences with this chip?

Do you need the exhaust done too and is there a noticeable noise level increase in cabin?

            Re: Engine Chipping

Had a 'Tunit' chip installed today. Bit early to comment on performance as only a 20km drive home. Was a toss up between the Tunit and DPChip, what swayed me to Tunit was positive feedback from people i know who have them and have had worry free motoring with this chip, as well as noticed improvement in low end torque and high end acceleration (overtaking ability), as thats what i wanted myself. Apart from price, Tunit 1,200 and DP 1,650 (installed), i was concerned over some reported issues the DPChip allegedly has with the 150 series ECU, sending it in to limp mode (found quite a few posts on this issue on other forums). Also, the Tunit Chip is as easy to uninstall as it is to install, my installer located everything within easy reach and ran me through how to unistall (unplug) the cable and simply reconnect as original should i ever need to do so. A 5 minute job, if that. When i enquired about the DPChip install i was told apart from plugging into the ECU like the Tunit, it also need be hard wired into the injectors, making unintall not so simple for the novice like me should it need be done, particularly in a remote area, which worried me. Install of the Tunit Chip took one hour, most of which was waiting for engine to cool down so they didnt burn themselves..
A word on warranty. Looks to be a grey area if there are issues as to what Toyota may or may not do in the case of any issues they could blame on he chip. The dealer who installed my Tunit Chip told me if there ever is any issues, Tunit will work with Toyota in sorting it out. I note Tunit now offer a 5 year warranty instead of 3 years. The place where my Tunit Chip was installed actually has done several Prado's on behalf of the local Toyota dealer, including one of the service managers own 150 GXL, i know because he was one of the people who recommended Tunit.
Once i have some km's under the belt with the Tunit Chip, will post my thoughts...

Schaffer says the chipit unit itself goes for $799 and petand60 got one from ebay for $630. Now for a 5minute installation job, I'd imagine they dynoed and fine tuned the car for $1200? Or was it a secondary chip that you got that monitors exhaust temps?

              Cheers

Got the price wrong. $899. I believe there are also upgarde modules that you can purchase. I believe out of the box there is no adjustment like you get on the DP chip altough you can manually upload different tune programs. The DP chip has an adjustment that requires a small screwdriver so that you can just change the setting when you want. I have heard as well that there is an option to allow for an addon chip that provides wireless access and also GPS tracking. Not sure if this is listed on their site but spoke to the guys there at one stage. With this wireless chip if your rig gets nicked then a program can be uploaded wirelessly (I think it worked through the mobile network so not sure if you need some sort of subscription) with the new tune program dramatically speed limiting your rig so instead they trash it and then torch it. Best to contact Chipit direct to confirm that option as I could be telling you a load of crap.

Nope, $1,200 was the price of the Tunit Chip installed with nothing else done. I am told the DPChip is basically a copy of the orginal Tunit Chip, both are adjustable (small screw driver, Tunit has 9 settings). Mine was originally set on 5, I changed it to 7 and noted a considerable difference in power. Reportedly the Tunit takes the kw from 126 to 147 and nm from 420 to 480, i guess this would be on the highest setting of 9.
                  Here is the link:
                  http://www.tunit.com.au/about/tunit-product-range.php
Also, I have noted a significant change in fuel economy. I was averaging 10l per 100km according to economy gauge and confirmed on fill up, after installing Tunit and setting to 7, and noticing a lot more power, i also noted the economy gauge dropped to sub 9l per 100km. Currently sitting on 8.8l per 100 km after half a tank. Once I have used a full tank I will confirm, I am quite surprised by this....

Did you get the EGR probe installed as well? If you did where did you mount the display? I ordered the EGR probe for mine so I can run "tune 5". I'm still working out where I'm going to put the display module and what is involved in tapping the probe into the exhaust directly after the turbo. I bet your Prado sounds tuff with the 3 inch system?

yeh i got the full kit with the egr probe they mounted the display under the parking and traction control switches just velcroed to the panel, its ok for now but might look at moving it later if i find a better spot think the exhaust i got had a port welded to the dump pipe not sure how they mount it to the standard one.The exhaust sounds real tuff may have to add a resinator as its a bit loud on the out side the turbo whistle is realy noticable but its quiet on the inside and no drone.
