    Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

The best I have had to date was on a highway run down to Canberra from Sunshine Coast QLD. I managed to get 8.81 l/100km and this is by my calculations not the trip computer, at the time there was 9838 on the ODO, I have never had better since. The car was loaded with 2 adults and 3 children (all 5 and under so pretty light) with a fully loaded boot, I also removed the awning for this trip but still had the roof bars on.

I typically average around 11 l/100km with a mixture of mainly city driving and some highway.

      Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

The best I got was 8.4 (Port Stephens to Brisbane via Cunninghams Gap) but found when fitting the ARB winch bar & lift kit it cost me about 1 litre per 100kms.

The fuel economy as presented by the dash is not accurate, it is reading about 1 litre/100kms low as per my calculations based on the fuel needed to refill the tank and the distance travelled. The speedo and odometer are both about 15% out but when I fitted 265/70/17 tyres (original 265/65/17) the speedo is at least now accurate. Odometer is out (travel 5kms, reads 4.2kms).

Just travelled from Brisbane to Cairns and return sitting on the speed limit. Found that when travelling in heavy rain the economy is much worse. I got 12l/100kms with a big head wind, 10.8 in heavy rain and 8.5 from Rocky to Brisbane in traffic (95kph, following trucks [about 100m]).

On the Cape trip with lots of off road, low range work, I got about 13.5. My brother has a 120 series with a trailer and a mate had a 120 series (no trailer). I consistently got better than both by about 5%.

Still cranky with the reduced fuel (from 180 litres to 150 litres) and the continuing problem with refuelling (last 20-30 litres bubbles up the filler hose and is very difficult and time consuming to fill).

      Nifty.

Hi Nifty - I found your comments interesting. If I drive my new diesel 150 down to the red when the light comes on and then go a little more so it tells me I have no more kms left in the tank, I then find I can get 130l in but that's it. Is this because of your comment - ie the last 20 litres or so takes ages to get in OR is it as Toyota have tried to tell me that there is STILL 20 litres in the tank and that is the back up for safety after the fuel indicator says there is no more left. What do people think?

I did another 80odd Km after the read out was zero and put a 140ltr into it, that is filling it right up.

I then did 304Km of hwy driving mainly on cruise control, it read 9.0l/100km and I then ended up putting 31.5ltr into the tank.
That is 10.36l/100km, not 9.0l/100km that is out by too much, not acceptable Mr Toyota.

By the way my tripo meter is pretty good, according to GPS 20km is 20.3 KM on the trip meter. So out by 1.5%.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

After 2500kms getting 13.5 around town, short trips, very stop start. 11.1 on the highway with rhino roof rack and full luggage bag on top. Trip computer is reading a little higher than calculated figures.

              Marrer,
Could be a bit of both. I found the Toyota fuel economy was too kind (ie reads 8.4 but calculations say 9.6) and when I attempt to refuel it is very difficult to get the last 20-30 litres into the tank. I use a ScanGuage III and found it is normally within half a litre of the amount of fuel used. I also found that when the low fuel light comes on there is still about 15 litres in the tank. You may have the same refueling problem as I do if it bubbles up the filler spout and after a girgle you can put more in.

              Nifty.

                  For my VX D4D,
Mainly city driving initially was 10l/100k for the first 400k
After bar+winch were fitted, it was 11.1l/100k for the next 1000k (city driving).
Last trip from Melbourne to Healesville and back, 144km, trip computer reset before trip, bar, winch (no lift),4 passengers, 9.1l/100k at end of trip.

                    Darecki,

I found it on ebay but ended up purchasing from the supplier:

                    http://www.scangauge.com.au/

I paid when ordering and it arrived the following day.

To locate the plug run your hand under the bonnet release mechanism and feel for it about 50mm under the catch. Its a rectangular socket.

If you need a photo let me know and I can post one for you. I also have some 'XGauge' numbers for additional monitoring. I usually have displayed battery volts, waer temp, distance to empty, and fuel remaining in tank. After you fill up you need to enter the amount of fuel needed to fill the tank. This information is then used to make the gauge more accurate. I found it took a few tankfulls for the meter to be accurate.

Might make a SCANGAUGE III index if there is enough interest.

                    Nifty...

                      Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

I have just read a few pages of this thread. interesting. I have a 150gxl with ARB bar, winch, BFG AT, dual battery. When new I drove from Hervey Bay to Townsville (1200kms or so highway) and averaged 11lt/100kms for the trip. I did 2700kms last week to Mt Isa and around and back - averaged a bit over 13l/100kms - higher speed. around town I sit on around 13.5l/100kms and sometimes more - sometimes sits above 15 for a few days.

Was dissappointed sitting on highway on cruise control and averaging 13.1 l/100kms. i have tried to drive sensibly as possible around town the last week and am sitting around 12.2l/100kms. GPS tested speedo is spot on - 120km/h shows 120km/h on gps.

almost at 10,000kms - might mention something at my service.

At least Im not the only one getting high fuel consumtion your sounds amost the same as mine.
I got a feeling some of the posts earlier were a bit on the low side not there total average. They were the instant reading you get.
I can get 7.6 L per 100km for 30 seconds sitting on 110km when Im going down a slight hill too.

sitting on 100km/h on highway I am pretty sure I can get around 11l per 100. although after a week or so of around town driving I am sitting at 15.2L/100kms currently. This is Townsville driving, not stop/start busy city driving. All these figures are provided by the onboard computer though.
I guess was is more accurate is the kms to empty. my empty is constantly at 130litres. zero range on computer = 20 litres left in the tank. From memory I get around 900 to 1000kms to the 130litres consistently.

Do you have a petrol? If you have a diesel check your air cleaner and tyre pressure.

I found that short trips costs lots but once the diesel is at operating temperature it seems to work much better. After refuelling the 'oh what a feeling' meter says 10 to 11 l/100kms worst case. I note that when my wife drives she uses anything from 12 to 13.5 l/1ookms (scangauge) but with all city driving I get around 11l/100kms or better. Driving from Rocky to Brisbane I got 8.4 (Toyota meter) and from Brisbane to Cairns and return I got less than 10l/100kms sitting on the speed limit based on fuel used and distance calculations.

Tyre pressure makes a huge difference. I run the BFGs (265/70/17) [not 65/17] at 41 psi. I always give the car a polish but not sure if this helps. I am behind the eight ball with the ARB bar and winch and lift kit. The other thing to watch is how hard you press the peddle to the metal. If you give this a bash you will use up lots and if you are gentle then it gives much better results. The other thing to improve economy is to lift your foot of the accelerator well back from the lights/stops and allow the car to slow. eg 60kph, lift off with 500m (or more) and brake when you are 100m away. The car slows to about 55kph before applying the break. This single activity greatly increases your economy and makes no difference to travelling time. Give it a go.

                            Nifty.

Quite true Nifty, sounds like the way I am driving it. I have an auto D4D and the scanguage tells me I get 15% better economy in S4 mode than A under 85kmh. I have a 8km drive to work 1/2 highway and half in town with plenty of intersections (mainly roundabouts) averaging 10.0 to 10.2 on the eco gauge (about 5% out) Sounds like this is pretty good going when you consider it takes the Prado 6km to get to operating temp. I have noticed that with a slightly heavy foot and driving right up to intersections you can add 20% to the fuel use. Down the highway on cruise should be consistant between vehicles though. The big variable here would be wind. The difference between a 20kmh headwind or tailwind will be huge although at that windspeed you would hardly notice the wind in the trees.
