When I bought my first Prado in '98 a good friend told me, " Oil is cheap". " Even if changing the oil twice as often on adds 50% to the total engine life, well that's 20x$50 extra for oil compared to say $3,000 for an engine overhaul.
We immediately drained out the oil provided by Toyota and used Mobil 1 for every service.
My Holden Astra workshop manual says there is no better way to improve the life of your engine than to 'invest' the DIY saving into changing the oil twice as often as the vehicle manufacturer recommends.
I believe the same would apply to the gearboxes, diffs and transfer case.
I have just purchased 2 x 5 litre containers for an oil change, not much else you can do with a 7 litre sump. At least the other half of the container gets used next time, or is useful for top ups.
I run all 3 of our cars on the same good oil and the extra couple of litres always ends up in a car somehow.
