  • Fuel Economy after fitting a TJM Snorkel

    Hi all,
Can someone let me know whether my fuel economy should have improved after fitting a TJM snorkel to my 2017 Pradu 3.0lr diesel as it used to be consistent at 9.6Ltr/100km but after fitting the snorkel i now average around 11.6/100km.
I would have thought it would have improved after fitting it.
Is this normal or do I need to check for leaks or maybe the mechanic it something when working on the car.

Has anyone recently added a snorkel to their car and what results to they see?

    Regards Nomadz

They make no difference mate, if anything it'll make it a tiny amount worse as you've increased the aerodynamic drag of the car. (not that you'll be able to measure this without specialised tools). Snorkles will not improve fuel economy though, they're just a piece of plastic pipe that raises the air intake so you can undertake water crossings that you wouldn't with the standard air box.

If the ECU is doing it's job correctly, it will detect more/cooler air coming through and increase the fuelling to suit. The device that affects the fuel economy most is attached to the end of your right leg. .
If the fuel economy worsens it is either because of drag or producing more power.

A snorkel won't increase the air flow into your engine- You've got a turbo on the end of that air intake pipe that'll suck in as much air as it can- Any "Ram Air" effect the the snorkel manufacturers claim (if at all true) would be negated by the 2 inch thick paper filter in the top of the air box. As I said before, it's sole and only job is to lift the air intake point further up so you can drive through deeper water without ingesting anything into your motor (I'll add that realistically few of us drive though water that deep on a regular basis anyway, and as our cars get older the electronics would be the thing that fails before the engine actually gets any water into it).

If it made any difference at all when mine was fitted, it would have been a very slight increase in consumption.

Air already being at filter is better than having to waste energy pulling it from inside the fender

A turbo still benefits from less restriction on both sides, in and out.

It it should keep your filter cleaner for longer as well.

There are a few reports from people that consumption has gone up after having one fitted, a few possible reasons are aero drag and a lot have had other accessories done at the same time. specifically the TJM intake has a sharp hook with rectangular a opening on some that is actually angled, you don’t want air running over the face.

It would be great to get some field results

It's not "wasting" energy- you've got a device that is able to move incredible amounts of air per minute at fairly high pressure (~10-12PSI). That's an incredible piece of machinery- I doubt having to "suck" air through a paper filter (which is has to do anyway with a snorkle) is going to even produce a measureable amount of difference- It's not different to those "electric superchargers" you can buy on ebay for a Naturally aspirated car.

Can anyone with a TJM advise whether they have any sort of drain in the plumbing? I have a Safari with a fully sealed factory airbox, and despite having driven in torrential rain for hours I have never soaked an air filter. Safari's have the vents at the back of the head that seem to work in driving rain, but Airtecs seem like they would act like a very efficient scoop?

Sucking the air from the fender inlet is using more energy than having it at the filter.
What amount of energy I can’t say but basic physics confirms this is the case

Not to mention the better air from a snorkel, Toyota run raised intakes as std on a few of there 4wds for good reason.

Some guys run nothing off the turbo charger on there race cars

From memory TJM advise keeping the factory air box drain, even safari leave it as optinal to seal, if the drain valve is in good condition it won’t cause any dramas leaving it as is

Was anything else fitted at the same time as the snorkel? 2L/100km is a large increase in fuel consumption. Was this calculated over one tank and was there anything different in your driving between that tank and previous ones?
