  • PRADO 150 Losing Power and Blowing Smoke after long trip

I've got a 2013 150 Prado GX with 70000 on the clock. I had the ECU tuned and Dinoed, added a snorkel and 3" exhaust. Car goes really well.. except on a longer drive (around 130 kms) the car gets a really 'drummy' sound, loses power and when I put the foot down blows a lot of black smoke. Its done it 3-4 times now, the first time I got an engine fault - OVER/UNDER boost, which it hasn't given since. When I stop it seems to reset itself. Has anyone had this problem? I'm taking it back to the guys that tuned it, they're saying it may be the veins in the Turbo getting stuck open. Does this make sense and is this a known problem with these cars? Cheers.

Following this one. Mine lost power and threw P0299 turbo underboost about 2 weeks ago towing our caravan. Limped home and took it to Toyota for a diagnostic. Instead of running a diagnostic as requested they decided to snap the overflow return off my radiator and then charge me $1k to replace the radiator. I went into the workshop to try to understand how the two were related and realised they had just broken it because they are clumsy rough f#&kwits. I then remembered why I hadn’t taken the vehicle there for the last 3 years. Not only did that trip cost me over a grand, they couldn’t find the code and suggested that it was probably the inter cooler pipes sucking flat. They didn’t have them in stock so I ordered and changed myself. Thinking the worst to be over we set off on the same trip (less the caravan)... all well and good for 600 km. 200km from home on the way back she lost power again, wouldn’t shift into 5th. Bugger all power, bugger all boost. Not keen on taking it back to Toyota so they can f#&k up something else and then charge me to fix it.

UPDATE to this thread and turbo / boost problems in general on the 1KD-FTV engine. After doing lots of googling and considering a number of remedies including replacement of the turbo and / or VNT stepper motor actuator. Upon calling an extremely knowledgeable guy from our local turbo shop who could have sold me a new turbo in a heartbeat, I was advised to check the small 'filter' that prevents oil mist from the intake air (thanks EGR) from fouling the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor. There are no scheduled service, inspection or replacement items in the toyota handbook at all but I now know that these little 'filters' become brittle with age and time spent in the blistering heat of the 150 engine bay and subsequently develop a hairline crack across the lower half. The effect is that the filter bleeds off pressure and the MAP doesn't see the correct pressure. There is a time-weighted tolerance on this difference in the ECU but under high / sustained load, the ECU will throw a code. Mine was P0299 and leads most people to spend big bucks replacing a perfectly good turbo. I have since replaced the filter with an OEM part 90917-11044 and it has SOLVED the problem. Having paid just shy of $60 for the OEM part I went in search of a non-genuine alternative and was shocked at the lack of availability. This prompted me to order some from the manufacturer (not Toyota). If anyone is experiencing the same problem or would like to ensure that they don't I am happy to part with these filters for $20 / each including postage to anywhere in Australia.

      Regards,
      Roadblock

Thanks Roadblock for the tip. I recently bought a 2011 Prado 150 with only 53K km on the clock but find it somewhat underpowered (especially when compared with my 2007 2.2L D4D Avensis). Two days ago on highway I had CEL+4LO+TCS lights on the dashboard (4LO flashing). Took the car to the nearest mechanic who checked the codes and found a P0299 error. He suspects turbo has to be replaced. Given the cost, I'm tempted to go first with your 'little filter' replacement. Can you please give me more indication on its exact position on the engine ?

My P0299 code was the turbo stepper motor on the side of the turbo that controls the veins. It cost me 600 to get it fitted and new one put on. Get an OBD bluetooth tool from ebay and see how much boost your 150 is making.. Mine makes upto 11psi but not sure if that is enough... Seems to run awesome and have enough power... The Map Sensor filter is near the EGR. Its a grey plastic disc about 2 cm tall and 2cm diameter with 2 hoses running into it. It clips in. EASY 15 second change over... If your EGR is full of shit then your MAP filter will probably also be full of shit therefore sending false readings to ECU....

                  Roadblock,

Did your issues (I note you said you were towing a caravan) happen after a prolonged period of engine braking, as has been discussed in the thread at https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...99-fault-code? Do you still have the MAP sensor filters?

                  Cheers,

                  David.

Its the MAP filter, not the MAF sensor..

Replace it for $60 or there are some youtube videos around showing how to clean it (if its not cracked)

                      It looks like this... https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-...-/192974768649
