  • Increased fuel usage after DPF clean

    Hi,

any ideas why fuel usage has gone up after Toyota “ cleaned “ the DPF?

It it has been looked at 2 times the first time I suspect they just did a forced burn fuel economy improved very slightly a few weeks later it was blowing smoke clouds they “ cleaned “ the filter and the last tank of fuel mostly free flow driving 70-100km returned 13.6per 100 that’s 1lt more than Prior to the clean which had slowly crept up from 11 to 12.5 over about a year

its normal - it takes a lot of extra burnt fuel to clean out the DPF when full , and extra fuel is consumed to keep it clean. The burns get more agressive the more blocked it is.

Yea, great system Toyota. One wonders if the 2.8 still meets the pollution requirements and if the stated test fuel consumption on the sticker is still achievable under the same test conditions when it IS using more fuel since the " üpdate". Have they had it retested?

It's not normal. After a clean from the dealership, you should be seeing far better returns.

The only thing that seemed to increase fuel was the ECU update - and then by around 1/2 litre / hundred in my experience at worst.

If you had smoke coming out - get them to replace your DPF. It's damaged. Lie if you have to - tell them it's happening again or whatever. But you should get a whole new DPF, not one that's been clogged, and then cleared only to the point of not producing smoke again (for a while).

My Prado averaged 11.2L/100 over 60,000+km's. Pre-ECU update it sat at around 10.8. After a Dealership full clean, it went to around 10L/100. As the DPF's clogged up and became spare parts, it went up another litre or so to 12L/100 or thereabouts.

Good luck getting a new one. I was told by the service guy last week that Toyota have just told the dealers to stop replacing the DPFs as a fix of the cause [ who knows what that is] is due "at some point".Until the unspecified cause is fixed the DPFs will keep failing.

            Thanks Camjam
They were my thoughts too, just odd that the next tank after the dearlerhip cleaned it, it has gotten worse but it would not surprise me if they did a half assed job, really need to find a better dealer the one we are going to are hopeless

I’ll have to call them up again starting to get sick of this already! But it’s hard to accept this 2.8lt is using 13.5lts in the best possible conditions

            404plug,
I have heard the same on the grape vine, even thow replacing it will ultimately lead back here eventually, how can they refuse to replace something that is damaged?

            Oh what a failure
