  • Terrible fuel economy

    Hi guys

    Ive been having some issues with my 2013 D4D Prado, most recently with poor fuel economy.

    the truck is a tourer, manual, running 265/70/17 Cooper st maxx, 2 inch lift, snorkel and rhino rack bars and has approx 145k km on it..

    Around town I used to get around 9-9.5 L/100km and on the highway towing a 1 tonne Camper approx 14 L/100km.

    now I’m getting around 11-12 around town and approx 17 highway towing the same camper.

    some background on my journey:

    earlier in the the year I had the ecu remapped, which then ended up in 2 turbo rebuilds due to exhaust turbine failure.

    i have since had the ecu map removed and the standard file replaced.

    i have also just had the injectors replaced. And have checked/cleaned the air flow sensor.

    other than all of this the truck is well looked after, has regular services, and has all the extra insurances such as catch can and fuel pre filter.

    so I’m putting this out there to all the Prado and D4D Guys and girls, looking for some ideas as to what I can look further into.

    I get the same figures on my 2010 150 which is has a lift and a few minor mods. One problem may be heavy soot build-up in the intake. I had my my EGR permanently closed at 100k, but there was already quite some build-up which is a major job to clean.

      yes I forgot to mention I had the intake fully cleaned.

      The main point here is that I used to get 14 on the highway and now am achieving 17. Same conditions, and this is whilst traveling at around 90kph with a light foot.

        Had my injectors replaced at 160k and did a trip to the west Fuel economy wasn't great similar to yours At next service same place I had injectors fitted I mentioned it After service all back to normal Don't know what they did ??

            They have to code the ECU for the new injectors, maybe they didn't do it?

                Happy New Year folks. For those with extra Fuel filters it might be worth checking if it has been changed or not. I completely missed changing mine a 5 micron Cat 156-1200 unit for a while and since changing it the economy is on the better side. Still need to know why there was so much change but in the first refill since the change the range indicator has gone up by about 100 kms.

                    I was charged $880 for cleaning the manifold. It’s quite a job.

                    Just to make sure the issue doesn’t come back with the sludge, I’ve installed a second catch can after the first that I have installed which ensures no oil residue goes back to manifold.

                      Good call, although both filters are new for me. Worth noting though.

                        Does anyone know if there is a way of calibrating the fuel economy readout on the dash?

                        interestingly a trip we’ve just done I compares the fuel economy again with readout and actual tank fills, and the readout was actually about 1.5 l/100km higher than actual. Reading was 16 and actual with stank fill came to 14.5. And this was with a trailer.

                        usually this is the other way around, where the reading will be lower, like displaying 16 and actually getting 17 - 18 with the tank full calc.

                          I always go with full tank to full tank, the average from the dash is not accurate. What is the most range that your vehicle shows with a full tank?
