  • Catch cans & Toyota Warranty

Spoke to a very well established diesel service and repair specialist in Cairns today about fitting a catch can to a new Prado. Basically Toyota have made it known that fitting a catch can will void any warranty claims relating to a host of repairs to various seals and back pressure related parts on engines and turbos. Apparently this primarily resulting from the use of cheap poor quality catch can systems but Toyota is avoiding any uncertainly by including all catch cans. As a result the diesel specialist is no longer fitting catch cans to any Toyota vehicles still under warranty. They also expecting a similar approach from Ford. Advice was to wait until the warranty period was nearly over and then sell vehicle or then spend the money on removing the manifold, doing a full clean and being right for another 200,000 km.

On a side note my 10 year old Pajero had a chemical carbon clean done at about 200,000 km and it made a large difference to performance and fuel economy.

What about a Toyota dealer that will fit a known brand catch can (Provent 200) to a new car pre delivery. The chance of having any engine issues with back pressure is nil - given the Provents have a PRV and you’d have a strong case given it was installed by a Dealer. Maybe not? It’s a risk I’m willing to take though after seeing the crud that came out of my last one!

Ive found it the other way. . Genuine Provent 200 fitted to one of my Diesel Toyota's.
Yesterday Toyota approved an engine based (Expensive) warranty claim on said vehicle without even blinking. They even inspected the car twice before approving.
It also has aftermarket Fuel Pre Filter and water trap fitted.

As a note the car is also now at 120k kms.

Thanks for the prompts to ask the dealer directly. I would then consider that unless they get me to sign a waiver agreeing that it was not recommended, then if they fit it then it does not impact warranty.

I've got a Provent going in a new Prado pre-delivery. They were happy to do it - it is listed as a non-genuine accessory on the contract though. It's like anything really, they need to prove that the catch can has caused the failure so that rules out 98% or the vehicle components. The other 2% they'd struggle to lay blame on a brand like Provent that have been doing it for years and have been fitted to thousands of vehicles with no moving parts and proven record. The chip argument is a bit less convincing, its messing with all sorts of signals in and out of the ECU so could potentially be under a lot more scrutiny if there was a related engine issue.
