  • 1GD-FTV Rattle at idle

Hi all, I have previously posted about my issue but since the forum hack it has disappeared.

i have a Nov 2018 prado with 12000km on it now and have a rattle noise present when idling link below to a recording of the sound. Its a on off rattle which is only heard when the car is fully warmed up, AC off, idling at 700rpm and parked on a slope facing uphill. I have been back and forward with toyota and a couple of dealers and so far have concluded that it is normal.

I have listened to 2 other prados without the dealer present, parked side by side on same slopes (one had 6000 and other 9000kms) and the noise wasn't there. However my last visit to a dealer we parked one of their prados with 30000kms it side by side on a slope and that one did have the same noise, that is when the conclusion was reached that its normal their possible explanation was that on a slope oil moves around differently under high pressure and would cause different noises.

In the background i did also take a oil sample for analysis to see if there is any indication of any metal on metal wear and this came back as all good.

So it would seem that i possibly have no issue as the 2 of the 4 Prados i have listened to are doing it and oil doesn't indicate any premature wear.

Im just wondering if anyone would have any idea if this is normal, what could be causing it, how many others others on here have noticed the same noise when parked on a slope, or if you haven't if you can park your car on a slope one day and have a listen for a couple of minutes (best heard in drivers side wheel arch or ear just in-front of the drivers side wheel under the car, car fully warmed up, parked on slope facing uphill,AC off, idling at 700Rpm) if you can hear anything.
If you do get a chance have a listen can you please note if you can or cant hear anything similar and how many Kms you car has done.

    Thank you

I can hear what you mean mate. May I ask what diesel you run?
I only ask as I bought a brand new 2013 diesel Hilux that year and I ran nothing but Caltex through it for the first 20k with no issues. I friend of mine had mentioned to me that he only ever runs mobile diesel in his truck and excavator, so I made the switch. About three tanks using mobile my Hilux seemed to develop something similar to what you are hearing. I’m not claiming to be a fuel engineer, just sharing my experience.
my suggestion is to run three tanks of Caltex diesel and see if it goes away. If not you have lost nothing. On a side note, I have since spoken with an Australian fuel engineer and he mentioned that in his opinion BP and Caltex diesel is all that he would use. Take that for what it’s worth my friend.
    all the best.

I have the exact same rattle (May 2018 VX with 20,000kms), I have noticed that when the a/c is on and the idle increases to about 900rpm the noise disappears. I first thought is was the under body protection (OEM), so this weekedn I removed, cleaned it and added some sound deadening mat to see if would help - but nothing. I need to spend more time under the car with a hammer to see if I can find any other rattles that could cause this. I wander if people with after market under body protection plates experience the same rattle?

Hey mate, that was one of my first thoughts when i started noticing the noise and before i figured out it was only when parked on hills . I was always running Caltex, but then tried BP for a few tank and now running on Puma for the past few weeks but it still all the same.

Hey mate, good to see im not the only one noticing this. Agree it appears that the slower the engine is idling the more noticeable it is, when stopped and in D idling at around 650rpm its even more noticeable with the resistance from the transmission.
Is yours only when parked on inclines?
Its definetly a noise from the engine, ive poked around with a stethoscope the on/off rattle is most noticeable underneath at the RH front of the engine pan cover.
Ive been to a couple of independent mechanics for a listen and the thought is that its the Timing chain or tensioner but cant really confirm without taking things apart which i dont want to do as its all under warranty.
It may be a characteristic of the engine im just trying to go around finding people with Prados and listening to theirs. So far 2 make the noise and 2 don't.

let me see if it happens just on inclines - I will get back to you (when I noticed the noise it was on an incline on my driveway). Would be strange that the timing change only makes a noise while on an incline..I will keep digging. My car was just in for service and should have asked at the time.

ok - you are spot on! the noise only comes when the car is on an incline! weird!!! Maybe an engine mount?

Its got me stumped. It could be a engine mount very hard to tell. So far with yours then 3 out of the 5 i've listened to do it so it may be a characteristic of the engine. ill keep investigating and keep you updated here with any results. If you do go back to Toyota do let us know what they say on your end.

Could it be a loose clip or bracket that when the car is on an incline it leans agains the motor?

Ive looked and listened all over and am 99% sure its from the inside of the engine. I have also this week had a couple of independent mechanics have a look at it and both reckon it may be a timing chain/tensioner noise. But not sure if its a characteristic or a fault.

Are the timing chain tensioners hydraulic operated on these engines?

                          Spring Enforced hydraulic tensioners apparently.

I doubt its a chain tensioner then if its hydraulic assisted seeing as it only happens on a slope. It happened on my motorbike and the only fix was to install a manual chain adjuster.
how hard is it to remove the rocker arm cover on these engines? Might be worth having a look if its easily accessible. My old Evolution 3 had issues where the hydraulic lifters would be noisy at times due to the port size of the lifter not pumping enough oil to take the slack on the rocker arm.
